Suri Cruise Wears Red Lipstick: Is It OK to Experiment With Makeup as a Kid?

First, it was the princess heels. And now, Hollywood's poshest five-year-old is testing the little-kid boundaries with something else: lipstick.

Suri Cruise, the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, was spotted a few days ago in NYC with her mommy sporting -- gasp! -- a trendy red stain on her lips.

We know, we know. It's not as bad as the full-on, makeup-sporting tots of "Toddlers and Tiaras" -- but it still made us do a bit of a double take.

Since when is it OK for a five-year-old to put on makeup?!

We'll give her the benefit of the doubt this time, as every kid should reserve the right to play dress-up from time to time. Just don't make a habit of it, Suri. We wouldn't want you to grow up too fast.

On the plus side, we think it's awesome that she's still holding a Cabbage Patch doll. Keep that playful youth alive!

Do you think it's OK for kids like Suri to experiment with makeup?

Absolutely, it's part of being a little girl. I have 2 girls, and they always loved to dress up in my clothes, high heels, and make-up. It's soo cute and innocent. Boys play with guns, and girls play dress up and mimic their moms. Anyone making a big deal out of this is insane, and must have never had a childhood. Suri looks adorable!!

    Now this is another story:

    This question is poorly phrased.

I think it is okay for little girls (or boys lol) to "experiment with make-up" within the confines of their home. I DON'T think it's okay for parents to put make-up on their children and parade them around town, as Suri's lipstick is clearly expertly applied.

She looks like a teenager rather than 5 years old.

    Darn.
My grandma had a tube of lipstick that had a fake plastic top on it that looked like the lipstick itself.
When she was putting on her lipstick before we'd leave- she'd give me a swipe with it-
and a folded hanky to smack my little lips on to blot- just like her.

I don't ever remember even realizing that it wasn't real, and that I wasn't wearing lipstick at all. I'm sure I promptly forgot about it 1 second later.
    It was fun.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again, I didn't even start wearing makeup until I was 13, and that was last year. Really? The girl is five! She should be worried about what to play next and not what shade of make up she is wearing. That's just me.

The press always seem to be out attacking this kid and her parents for letting her wear kitten heels/lipstick/carry purses. She might wear all that stuff but there are worse things to do to your child, and I think she still looks like a kid (unless people over the age of six have started carrying stuffed animals around) so whats the big deal?

Considering that this kid has about a 99% chance of being completely screwed-up, just like every other Hollywood kid, I'd say the lipstick is the least of her worries. Come back when she's 13 and we'll discuss her addiction to Oxy or the stupid tattoos that will cover the majority of her body when she's 16...

I think so. While they should remain kids as long as possible, they seem to want to experiment and emulate their parents. I have two nieces and it's cute and sometimes a little scary to watch it haha. There are limits of course. It's the job of the parents to keep it age appropriate.

She has always been such a pretty feminine little girl.

We had a play makeup set that my sister and I would play with at that age. When my older cousin would be babysit she would let us play with her makeup too. Little girls like to dress up and pretend.

That is what my mom told me. Perhaps, that is why this street fashion is so popular. She said that nice women did not use makeup other than face powder. Often, women who did not have money used baking flour. And even that was considered a deception. mom told street fashions popular women makeup powder deception thank you monkey

Suri is growing up to be a beautiful young girl just like her mother. I think the red lipstick is surprising to us all yet there may have been a reason for her sporting it. Maybe there was a party that she attended or a photo shoot and then it could have been staged as a publicity stunt. Whatever the reason, I think there is no shame in it as long as makeup is not going to be a part of her everyday agenda. I'd rather see young Suri taught early on to be a lady and to connect with her feminine side than to see her dressed like a tomboy and have her sexual orientation all mixed up later on in life. One makeup tip Katie ~ lighten up on the red a little. A soft pink would be more subtle for young Suri !

FYI, dressing like a tomboy cannot "mix up" one's sexual orientation. While it's true that plenty of lesbians preferred to dress in a tomboy like fashion when they were young, it was not the act of dressing boyishly that made them lesbians. Homosexuals and bisexuals are born with their sexual orientation just as heterosexuals are; it isn't chosen, or the result of poor parenting, or god's displeasure with humanity manifested in children.

I totally disagree with you and that's what makes the world go round.
FYI, A child lives what they learn. You dress a young girl like a boy when they are young and more often than not, they will lean towards the masculine side. It does send mixed signals to the brain and the child is more comfortable with what their first programimg is.
Just like a young girl who dresses feminine will most likely be a lady when she is older because she fashions after her first programimg and with what most influenced her.
Homosexuals are not born this way. God does not create homosexuals or lesbians. Every creation of God is made a heterosexual. What a human being chooses to do with their gender is their personal choice. Environment and child rearing both play a major role in a child's later sexual development. If a child is exposed to homosexuality , chances are greater that they will accept this way of living. It's a combination or any of these isolated factors ; exposure, first programing , environment, child rearing.
A child lives what they learn. God gives us free will to choose. It's what we do with that free will that is the question.

Oh my gosh when I was that age I would slather makeup all over my face. I would look like a hooker clown!! BUT I was never allowed to go out in public of course. Maybe she couldn't get the lip stain off or begged her mom to let her keep it on. I think its innocent playing.

Did you go out in public like that? Her lipstick did not appear to be put on by herself, which means mama put it on her. Little girls just don't put on lipstick that well.

it's nothing extreme. she is just wearing lipstick. it's not like she's wearing concealer. my mom let me experiment with makeup when i was 7, partly because i was a dancer. but it's fun to play dress up everyone once in a while. and it doesn't seem like they're making her wear the makeup. she's just a true girly girl at heart. nothing wrong with that
