Sugarland Tragedy Claims Five Lives: Do You Feel Safe at Concerts?

What should have been a marvelous night for everyone at a Sugarland concert on Saturday turned out to be one of the most tragic concert-related events in recent history.

An enormous gust of 60 mph wind reportedly hit the stage at the Indiana State Fairgrounds at 8:49 p.m., sending the entire structure toppling into the audience.

The collapse killed five people and injured more than 40 others.

Reporter David Lindquist, who was at the concert, recalled, "The gust of wind came, there was no rain yet and the production fell from left to right. And you could see, you could clearly see people were under the footprint of the rigging."

It's still unclear why the structure was not able to withstand the wind, but meteorologists and police investigators are claiming that because there was little to no damage elsewhere on the fairgrounds, the gust that toppled the stage must have been an unforeseeable "fluke."

Sugarland reached out to concerned fans via Twitter that night, writing, "We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need your strength."

Our hearts go out to the families of Alina Bigjohny, Christina Santiago, Tammy Vandam, Glenn Goodrich and Nathan Byrd.

Every time something like this happens; the question is asked " Do you feel safe doing this ... do you feel safe eating that ? Fact is this type of thing is rare, heck there are out door concerts going on all the time, and the vast majority of them do not end like this . We can not stop living our lives due to fear of random acts.

there is always going to be the horrific situation that arises and receives lots of media to laser it into our consciousness, but the vast majority of events go off without a hitch. While these incidents are tragic and do give pause, we can't be scared of our shadows or we won't be able to get out of the house

You can't stop living because of a tragedy. You can't stop living because something bad might happen. You could stay in bed and hide from the world but, then you could fall out of bed and kill yourself, or smother yourself under the blankets. Just Live!

It could have been any event. To my knowledge weather has nothing to do with he function at the site. It isn't as though the crowd created the saftey problem here, unless they find a load of drunks hanging from one of the struts causing the problem. Either way I do feel bad for the families and friends of the poor victims. No guarantees in this life. I'll say a pray for all of them. Sorry for your losses.

There are still investigations into the cause of this tragedy, but all witnesses agree that it was a matter of five minutes between the dark clouds appearing on the horizon and the wind blowing through, knocking down the stage fixtures. Also, Indiana is known for its capricious weather. Straight line wind gusts took out several skyscraper windows in downtown Indianapolis in April 2006 minutes after John Mellencamp concluded a free downtown concert. In 2004 the Indianapolis 500 was delayed for two hours when a tornado touched down just south of the speedway. The point is, this was a freak accident and not likely to be repeated. I will continue to attend such events with confidence.

That was a freak storm that moved through and no one had a chance to get out of it's path.
I've always felt safe at a concert, but things happen that we can't predict.

My sympathy goes out to those familes that were hurt and to those who lost their loved ones in that tragedy.

Not really, but that isn't why I don't attend concerts. First the music is crappy, loud, and distorted, the toilets are a mess, food is horrible, etc,.. The people usually drunk or stoned and I'm not just talking about the crowd,... a bit of care is needed when assembling all that scaffolding and equipment.

It was a freak accident. The only reason it happend was because of something that no one would have foreseen. the winds were ata record high speed that the stage wasnt meant to bear against

I've heard they have used that stage quite often and they check it all the time. It was just nature at its worst that night.
