Lopez, who was undefeated since 2002, was a heavy favorite to defend his Gold in Beijing. He lost in a quarterfinal match after a questionable penalty deduction cost him the lead, and eventually the match. The referee said Lopez used a "cut kick", and illegal move in which one kicks away an opponent's kick before it comes above the waist. A protest by Lopez's coach was denied.
