Athletes always appear on the front cover of the sports pages for crimes, drugs, domestic violence, drunk driving, team fights, etc... The media doesn't show enough of the positive side of athletes, who often donate time and money to charity. The media makes it hard for parents to find positive role models for kids when they constantly cover the negative news and rarely cover the positive side of professional athletes.

MSN.FOXSPORTS.COM reports:
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley reportedly donated $60,000 to Saginaw (Mich.) Public Schools to allow the school district to waive participation fees for student-athletes.

All over tv and in the sports page but when they go stupid it just makes headlines because like they are a celebrity acting stupid.

Good press just doesn't sell as much as scandal and cheating.

The news only wants slander, insults and hate to report on instead of acts of charity and good. The later doesn't get the ratings or the readership they lust after.

Let's face it, reporting bad behavior equals better ratings and ratings are all the media really cares about.

Good for him - I will now always think of him as a stand-up guy. We need more good citzens like LaMarr Woodley and less rapists like Kobe Bryant.

the press seems to be more worried about the bad things they do rather than the good, it would be nice to see "so and so is involved in the bounty, but did you know he donated x amount of dollars to...."

Pro sports is a waste of money and time. They need lower wages and should have to pass background checks.... i think any bad press just reflects the tone of the sport. And they do donations of time and money for tax write offs. Screw them.

No, but I love me some athletes and honestly couldn't care less what they do with 2% of their income. If they get a whole bunch of press for doing stuff then they'll just be buying publicity.

i don't know that the press is always bad but kudos to LaMarr.....I worked in Saginaw for years and parts of it are much like Flint and Detroit, very poor and lots of murders....that's awesome that he's helping those inner city kids to a better life....they need it

On average most don't do much good, blow through the money on drugs and hookers, and 5 years out of football, are broke and on welfare.

Yes, but they do so many bad, bad things that the rest of us would go to jail for, til it outweighs the good.

Good for him doing that, but the parents REALLY need to stop expecting others to pay for crap.

They get more than they need. Isn't being a millionaire for just plying a game enough?

No. Usually, the hypocritical American attitude is this:

"I live in a country where I believe that everyone has a right to reach their dreams, become the best in their field, and earn as much as they are able to.... unless they are athletes. If they're athletes, I become jealous and don't believe that the American dream applies to them."

Hell no they don't get enough good press. That's the mass media for you. They build people up to damn near Godlike status then tear them down when they make a mistake. I barely heard anything about him giving the money but God forbid let him get a into a fight at practice or something and I bet for weeks all you will hear is how bad a teammate he is and that he has anger management issue.

On Around the Horn They have been talking about Chad Johnson (maybe) hitting his wife for 2 days. And the most time that this got a the show Around the Horrn was 30 seconds as the show was going off . Why not talk about this for the same amount of time that this .

Some people even go broke while trying to help others like Muhsin Muhammad , and hell this is even why Gorge Foreman got back into boxing his place for kids sucked up all his money and he went back in to the Ring to get money from them.. Than the rest is history . But know one talks about these cases. you have to hunt these stories down.

It's a foregone conclusion that every day, when I turn on ESPN, I'm going to hear some story about the latest bad thing an athlete did. Maybe it's Chad Ocho cinco Johnson abusing his wife, or Melke Cabrera using performance enhancing drugs. So often we hear about the bad. I think we should also hear about the good. So let us put our hands together for Michigan Wolverine (once and always) LaMarr Woodley!!!

Not even close. The people that follow football know the good side is much bigger then the bad. Its the people that don't watch football and have no clue what players in the league do that cause the biggest stinks when something does go down.
