There is a great disturbance in the Force. Well, at least there are a lot of dedicated “Star Wars” fans that are freaking out that the White House rejected a petition that they’d signed to build a real life “Death Star” by 2016. The 34,435 people who signed the official plea argued that the undertaking would “spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”

But Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, shot a few holes in the Rebel Alliance’s plan. For one he noted that the project would be against the Administration’s position against blowing up other planets.
He also pointed out that construction would cost an estimated $850 quadrillion. And then he asked “New Hope” fans, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a “Death Star” with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?” All good points that even C-3PO couldn’t debate.

He also used his response to point out that we already have a pretty great spacecraft hovering above Earth called the Space Station. Sure, it’s no Millennium Falcon. But no one really needs to make the Kessell Run in less than 12 parsecs these days, do they? What do you think: Should the U.S. build its very own “Death Star”?

I'm going to assume that the petition was a joke, right?
