SLIDESHOW: The Most Anticipated Upcoming Reboot?

“Total Recall”

“Total Recall”

Colin Farrell might seem like an unlikely choice to step into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s role in “Total Recall.” But this version isn’t even set on Mars, so die-hard fans should be ready for some significant changes.

Colin Farrell might seem like an unlikely choice to step into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s role in “Total Recall.” But this version isn’t even set on Mars, so die-hard fans should be ready for some significant changes.

  2. “A Star Is Born”

    “A Star Is Born”

The Clint Eastwood remake of the Barbra Streisand remake of the... and so on and so on... is still in the works. Beyonce's the diva, but with “Rock of Ages” a miss, will Tom Cruise still play the has-been rock star?

  3. “Top Gun”

    “Top Gun”

Tom Cruise is, however, slated to appear in the reboot of his career-making action flick “Top Gun.” After all his divorce drama wraps up, he’ll no doubt be feeling the “need for speed” once again.

  4. “Dredd”

    “Dredd”

Since the 1995 version “Judge Dredd” was a total flop, the British production company is distancing themselves from the Karl Urban starrer “Dredd.” First smart move: not bringing back Rob Schneider.

  5. “Robocop”

    “Robocop”

Yes, “Robocop” has been revived a lot — including two sequels, an animated show, a miniseries, and two live-action dramas, both of which lasted just a season. So fans will see what the Joel Kinnaman version offers.

  6. “Carrie”

    “Carrie”

Chloe Grace Moretz will have some big, albeit blood-soaked, shoes to fill in this remake of Stephen King’s first published novel. But can she deliver the quiet power of Sissy Spacek’s original performance?

  7. “Red Dawn”

    “Red Dawn”

Since Patrick Swayze’s untimely death, fans have been super-nostalgic about his work. While the “Dirty Dancing” remake flounders, devotees will have to settle for a “Red Dawn” reboot starring Chris Hemsworth.

  8. “The Birds”

    “The Birds”

It takes nerves of steel to remake a Hitchcock thriller. Many have failed — remember the shot-for-shot “Psycho” debacle? That’s why the team behind the rumored Naomi Watts reboot are taking their time.

Going by box office results, “Spider-Man” is truly amazing. Marc Webb's reboot of the superhero flick grossed a record $59.3 million in its first two days of domestic ticket sales. And with that, Spidey glided in to the second-best July 4th gross of all time, right behind “Transformers."

Of course, the buzz leading up to the release of the film was strong. Fans seemed happy with the casting of Andrew Garfield, who slipped on the red-and-blue suit instead of Tobey Maguire this time around. At least they knew the “Social Network” star was excited about the role — he'd been a fan since dressing as Spider-Man for Halloween when he was three.

As can be expected in Hollywood, “The Amazing Spider-Man” is just one movie in a long string of anticipated reboots coming to theaters soon. It seems like every film is ripe for a modern makeover, including a new “Annie” starring Willow Smith, an updated “My Fair Lady” with Carey Mulligan, and “Barbarella,” which is rumored to have Katherine Heigl in the Jane Fonda role.

Understandably, cinephiles are more excited about some of these remakes than others. Action fans will no doubt fly to theaters for the new “Top Gun,” and horror fans will put on their finest to go to the prom with “Carrie.” What reboot are you most excited about?

But the original is a classic. Watching the remake, don't you think it is going to be sort or dull because you have alreday seen it and know what the story is about and what is going to happen.

Well I am the type of person that watches the movie over and over again and never gets bored, gasping at all the same places and laughing at others and even crying as if I were watching it for the first time LOL. So for me, seeing a remake will be like watching it for the first time again.

I just hate that they keep remaking things instead of writing something new. We will have to see what Carrie is like in the year 2012. I plan on watching the original in blu-ray with my daugher some time this week and introduce her to this psychic bitch.

LOL yea, they might have to change some things because of it's new time period. And good idea! Everyone should see Carrie, it's one of the best horror movies/thrillers ever. And as for nothing new, I agree, the only really original movie that came out this year so far was Prometheus. And the others that get made are the ones that get nominated for Oscars each year, and there are only a few of those too.

No one who wanted to try to fit into Arnolds shoes. What a stupid idea. Remake Total Recall. It was a perfect movie to begin with.

Did anybody really understand the first "Total Recall"? Or did everybody just enjoy Arnold because he was very popular at the time and there was a lot of action in the film and funny parts, which are good reasons.

I understood it and loved it when I saw it in the theatre way back in the day. It is a classic scifi flick and shouldn't be redone. If you want to remake something you can improve upon, go right ahead. But this was perfection and should not have been touched. Tweek it. Make it 3D... but don't remake it.

They ruin a lot of good movies with remakes... it's very difficult to recreate that magic of the original.

Planet of the Apes SHOULD'VE been good. They relied too heavily on special effects and didn't focus on story. The story is a good edition but should've been more modernized. It's like watching a prettier 1970s version. Those earlier versions were not too exiting. The first one great but the rest were okay at best. Great books, however.

As for remakes, they try to add too much at once. Once again, they rely on effects to hide plot holes, poor casting, and bad writing. Case in point: Clash of the Titans. Amazing action scenes. Bad script...

A positive remake is Star Trek. They kept the story simple and the special effects were believable. The casting was on the money! I believed Spock was Spock and Kirk was Kirk. A perfect prequel...

I agree with most of your comments. But I thought the Star Trek movie was missing something. Maybe I expected too much but as a Star Trek TOS fan, I wanted more. Maybe the second one will be better.

I would have to say that, in my opinion, Tim Burtons version of Planet of the Apes was not as good as the original. Sure they had better make-up and EFX but the movie itself sucked.

Yep... What I like to call a shallow movie. All look, no brains. As for the Star Trek, you are correct. I'm not a fan but I enjoyed the previous movies. The plot was vague enough to draw me into the story but not so complex that only a fan would get the point. Sort of like The Hulk movies... I'm a fan. So, the plot was far too thin and went to far into trying to explain how Dr. Banner became Hulk. Instead, they should've made more action scenes. The again, not many people understand his origins, so they had to fill the first movie with extended dialog and drama.

Burton's version wasn't nearly as good. I thought the new Planet of the Apes was great. Plus, it provided a logical explanation to how humans lost power and why apes took over. Beautifully written story...

The original Robocop is a classic. Peter Weller was so believable and the part man part machine police officer. I don't believe you are going to improve upon the original plot and story with better EFX. Watch the original, it is on all the time on cable and it might be on Netflix too. The Rob Bottin EFX are fantastic.

Spiderman was amazing until part 3...too many unrelated stories in one movie. Venom, Hobgoblin, Sandman, and Carnage don't belong in the same movie...They didn't even appear during the same decades, for crying out loud!!!

Carnage? i don't recall that one I do recall the Hobgoblin, Venom and Sandman. the decades argument is kind of nil though because Spidey didn't age a bit over those decades either and in fact still hasn't. The passage of time is irrelevant but yes there were too many characters and plots for just one movie. Truth is the only reason that spidey was rebooted was because Raimi was never able to come up with a workable script in time and he was at odds with the studio and finally quit so the studio had no choice but to reboot.

I do not like to see some movies redone. This gal is almost too pretty to fill the role of Carrie. I do not think the original "The Birds" was that great so they might do better this time. I like Cruise in Top Gun and not sure if I would watch the new one.

These movies are classics, so personally I don't look forward to any of the remakes. Hollywood will just dumb-down the stories and fill them with pointless action, sex, or violence. Mind you, I'm no prude, I just think one should worry about content before you worry about the add-ons.
