With 14.3 total viewers tuning in for the third part of History's miniseries Hatfields & McCoys
last week, and an average of 13.8 total viewers for the three-night
event, it's safe to say there's an interest in dramas about feuding
families. So it's no real surprise to hear that at least one major
network may be in the market for its own slice of that successful pie.
There's a project in the works that could put a modern twist on the true
American story and by what's being reported, there's a pretty big
celebrity name attached.
Deadline
is reporting that NBC is in the process of working out a deal for a
Hatfields and McCoy series to be produced by Charlize Theron and ABC
Studios, with Eagle Eye's John Glenn set to create the pilot. Per
the site, the project will bring the centuries-old family feud to a
contemporary, urban setting. "The Hatfields have risen to incredible
wealth and power, while the McCoys are working-class." Interesting.
There may be something to that concept, especially if it's being treated
like a sequel, with the two families still at each others throats well
over a century after it all started. Who couldn't picture history
repeating itself here as one of the Hatfields falls for one of the
McCoys while the rest of them feud? That's pure speculation at this
point, though. From the sound of it, this is still in the early stages
of development, but after enjoying History's telling of the historical
family feud, I'd be interested to see what becomes of this project -
including who's cast in the lead roles and which city will play the part
of the "urban setting" - should this project get off the ground.
