Make sure the lawyer understands that your identity is protected by attorney-client privilege and then fight the Lotto to keep my identity out of the press. It is ludicrous that these new multi-millionaires have their identify, complete with names, photographs and where they live, spread across the nation by the media. Do they not understand the danger of identifying someone with that kind of money to every felon in the nation? They are putting the winner as well as his family and friends in great danger by shining the spotlight on him/her. The policy should be the exact reverse of what it is - the person should presumptively be entitled to anonymity (except of course to the IRS, but 1040s are supposed to be confidential anyway.)

My points above subsume another of the choices, using extreme caution with spreading the news) but I would also give the majority of the money to charity, probably by creating my own charitable trust to support charities that I favor.

If I could win a humongous jackpot like that, I'd take care of my family's needs, some friends too, then I'd high-tail it out of my grossly liberal state, find some nice, respectful red state to settle down in, and disappear. I'd even consider the option of leaving the country until it comes back to its' senses. I'd invest and buy gold, give a lot to charity, and live a quiet, comfortable life.

With even one percent of that I can have a secure life for my family along with some fun money. Legal advise would be good but putting it in a bank, well maybe several banks, would mean it is secure and one percent interest on 550million dollars is 5.5million a year. OK, so the state and Federal will take in taxes almost half, but still WOW. I probably would give most of it away though. Like I said 6million take home would make life secure and plush. Well until the commies, most likely Obama and the Chinese, take it away. Maybe I could buy a seat in Congress to be safe.

actual extreme caution as well. I already have a Financial advisor and attorney. keep my name underaps and key you know like Obama records. I do have several people I will help. Mainly my oldest son so he can quite work and get well from whatever is still casuing him to be sick. Then make sure my handicap son is set for life so I won't have to worry about his future without me.

My Dream for others = I have always wanted to set of an account to help people that I hear about that have been screwed by the system.

I will be donating 99% to family and charities; and to the sick and needy(after opening a little computer shop for me and my brother)
I will be left with 5 mil; and buy my wife a little house in the country; fix up the old homestead and let whoever needs a place to stay; and let them live there free
and then after making prepper alterations to the new homestead; stock it; and save enough to live on..it's a pretty simple plan; what would I need all that money for when I can help thousands??

Keep in mind that $550 million today is only worth $ 231 million in 2008 dollars.

First thing I would do is have all my records sealed. Next I would get a new social security number, preferably from Connecticut. After that, I would get some college degrees. Those would be from Columbia and Harvard Universities. I would have my legal team handle that, so that I wouldn't have to personally attend and be exposed to others that might recognize or remember in the future. After fast tracking those, I would give back to the community and begin my new life as an organizer.

First of all, I wouldn't want anyone to know I won. People crawl out of the woodwork as soon as they realize there is money to be had. Second, I'd get advice on how to handle it so it doesn't disappear in a few years time.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Abraham Shakespeare could barely read, wrote his name in block letters and had given away most of his $17 million in lottery winnings when he became friends with Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore, a calculating woman who later became his financial adviser, prosecutors said Wednesday.

During opening statements in Moore's first-degree murder trial in Tampa, assistant state attorney Jay Pruner said Moore swindled what was left of Shakespeare's winnings from his bank account in 2009, then killed him and buried his body under a concrete slab in her backyard.

Money, you've got lots of friends
    Crowding round the door
    When you're gone, spending ends
    They don't come no more
    Rich relations give
    Crust of bread and such
    You can help yourself
    But don't take too much
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
    That's got his own
