Sikh Temple Massacre Casts Light on White-Power Rock: Censor Hate Music?

The murderer who killed six members of the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin founded a white-power rock group in 2005. This connection exposed a link between hate groups and their music, which includes lyrics of hateful acts toward minorities, Jews and non-whites.

Marilyn Mayo monitors hate groups for the Anti-Defamation League. Mayo told the AFP, "Hate music helps bring haters together into a shared community." Hate groups and their members meet through hate music and hate-music festivals.

“Racist music is what keeps the movement young” and sets it apart from the image of white-hooded Ku Klux Klan members “sitting on the front porch with a shotgun,” said one-time skinhead Frank Meeink on MSNBC television. Do you think hate music should be censored? Will censoring this type of music prevent tragedies like the Wisconsin massacre from happening?

As much as I despise the speech, it's free speech. The same tests apply as for any speech.

Though I'd love to permenatley silence an outcry of racism, it contidicts free speech.

As shameful as it is. I cannot support something that increases government power and goes against the first amendment.

    Who decides?
Pretty much any music with strong emotion could be interpreted as hate by someone.
Besides, that nazi music is so bad it censors itself as no one wants to here it.

That would just open the door to more and more censorship. All "for the good of the people". Don't give the government that kind of ability...EVER.

I'm sorry, did I miss something? Did the white-power guy beat these people do death with his ipod?

You post a question about censoring music after an ex-army crazoid with a "take action" philosophy and multiple heavy gun purchases opens fire in a church?

It's hateful, yes. But the law protects terrible speech too, and it has to.

We give up our natural rights by even entertaining these questions. The last thing I want is the government to entertain the idea of limiting the very thing I was born to do.

Why does it have to protect something that hateful? WHY?

Because that's how it works. Free speech isn't nice speech.

So you do not have the freedom of expressing what you truly feel? If we want to be open minded about the emotions of others and what we might do to rectify them, treating them like insolent children, putting them in the corner, and telling them to shut up is not the way I want the government running things.

Freedom isn't supposed to make you feel safe. That's what your family is there for. They exist to protect you, to ensure you have a successful life. You lie in strange beds if you make the government your family. The government is not here to make your life a dream, it exists in order to keep the infrastructure together, not to send you to the corner when a defect in a supposed perfect society presents itself. The blemish comes from people like you wanting to tell others what to think.

"Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"

Yes, but what do we call those who refuse to allow the person to open their mouth? This that you believe in is not freedom.
