Sikh Temple Massacre Casts Light on White-Power Rock: Censor Hate Music?

The murderer who killed six members of the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin founded a white-power rock group in 2005. This connection exposed a link between hate groups and their music, which includes lyrics of hateful acts toward minorities, Jews and non-whites.

Marilyn Mayo monitors hate groups for the Anti-Defamation League. Mayo told the AFP, "Hate music helps bring haters together into a shared community." Hate groups and their members meet through hate music and hate-music festivals.

“Racist music is what keeps the movement young” and sets it apart from the image of white-hooded Ku Klux Klan members “sitting on the front porch with a shotgun,” said one-time skinhead Frank Meeink on MSNBC television. Do you think hate music should be censored? Will censoring this type of music prevent tragedies like the Wisconsin massacre from happening?

As much as I despise the speech, it's free speech. The same tests apply as for any speech.

We don't ban things. Whether we like it or not, even scumbags like this have the right to express their opinions. First amendment. If we start banning things like this, who's to say where the banning will stop? Censorship is something authoritarian places like China do.

It's actually a funny question if you think about it. What makes hate music hate music? Does it have to be racial hate or is any type of hate included? Half of the music out there today is full of hate but the only music being looked at is music that puts down non-whites? There's songs about men hating women, women hating men, blacks hating certain whites, blacks hating other blacks, and then whites hating non-whites is the only one that gets attention? If you want to end or censor "hate" music you'll have to censor a lot more than just some idiots who have no accomplishments in life to be proud of and so they have to pretend that the color of their skin makes up for their stupidity and makes them better than others. But, this country was founded on certain freedoms, one of which is free speech and to censor hate music would be a violation of that right. So no, the government should not waste their time and our money trying to do the impossible and should also stop giving these attention craving idiots attention and go back to taking care of the important things in this country, like the massive deficit.

It just opens the floodgates for legitimate forms of music to be censored as well.

Censorship is stupid. the problem is people. Not music, not guns, not propane tanks.
We live in the US not the Peoples Republic of China. One person's music becomes offense. Frankly, listening to Hip Hop is about the last thing I'd have on the radio. Some people "hate" Country Music, I like it.

Music IS not behavior, a person's actions are the problem.

This is not music that is on any radio stations as it is. This is America. We do NOT CENSOR. Freedom of speech.

Hell look at rap lyrics if you want to see hate and mysogeny out in the open and it IS played on radio. If we do not censor that (for content, not language) then we do not censor any other form of music either.

As much as I don not agree with the ideologies they have, free speech is free speech. Regardless of what Miss Mayo claims, the music is not what brought these people together. Yes it may have "helped" , but hate groups have been finding people since the beginning of hate groups just by groups.

Free speech means "freedom of all speech," especially the impolite things. Polite speech needs no protection. The minute we start censoring one message, we can make the argument to censor any message.

This is not a defense of hate speech... I'm sick of hate in all of its forms and it makes me mourn for America... but make no mistake... free speech and expression is America's most sacred right and if we marginalize one group, we marginalize them all.

People who want to censor music, movies, video games, books, art, etc. have it backwards. They think the media causes the problem, when in reality it's the problem that causes the media to be produced and purchased. Censorship is like mopping up a flooded bathroom floor while ignoring that the faucet is still running. This guy obviously was a nutcase BEFORE he started his stupid white-power band, and anybody who was a fan of his band was probably a nutcase to begin with too or they would not take an interest in this obscure type of music. There are probably a few cases where the music or media influenced a person to commit a crime, but this is the exception rather than the rule, and we cannot use it as an excuse to limit free speech.

While I don't agree with that kind of music, or that kind of thinking, government restrictions and censorship is not going to make it go away, in fact, it will, probably, make it more popular. Not to mention, that will violate the artists' rights of free speech and the listeners' rights to hear it.

Actually that is a liberal thing, we fight for your right to say what you want to say. Dont you understand that? Freedom of speech is important.

You may say you want to censor someone else, but remember that it is a slippery slope and will wind up BADLY.

Yes,freedom of speech is important, but that does not give you the right to abuse it,again common sense,a panel of people of all different beliefs, and having "common" sense, something a lot of people lack.
