Sikh Temple Massacre Casts Light on White-Power Rock: Censor Hate Music?

The murderer who killed six members of the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin founded a white-power rock group in 2005. This connection exposed a link between hate groups and their music, which includes lyrics of hateful acts toward minorities, Jews and non-whites.

Marilyn Mayo monitors hate groups for the Anti-Defamation League. Mayo told the AFP, "Hate music helps bring haters together into a shared community." Hate groups and their members meet through hate music and hate-music festivals.

“Racist music is what keeps the movement young” and sets it apart from the image of white-hooded Ku Klux Klan members “sitting on the front porch with a shotgun,” said one-time skinhead Frank Meeink on MSNBC television. Do you think hate music should be censored? Will censoring this type of music prevent tragedies like the Wisconsin massacre from happening?

As much as I despise the speech, it's free speech. The same tests apply as for any speech.

Guns, knives, box cutters, booze, cars, cigarettes, and the like don't kill people, people with intent kill people. I will say however that standing in the DVD isle at Wal-mart yesterday, 80% of the movies had a cover with a weapon of some sort as part of the movie. Influence, perhaps, but the real culprit is progressivism and it's attack on our morals.

I realize this doesn't help the families of the victims cope, I am truly sorry that this happened to them.

Censor it and it will just go underground, where it will fester and grow, until it reaches a breaking point and it gushes out into the world. And, of course, since these guys were the hated and demonized "victims" of censorship, they'll probably end up being seen as heroes for "breaking the mould", or "going against the status quo", despite being completely backwards and moronic.

No. You need to let people like this speak, so that everyone with a brain can openly make fun of them for their stupid ideas. You will not end hate by hiding it, it will end when it is shown be a painfully moronic joke.

Music has nothing to with hate. Hate is hate. If person has hate in his/her heart, all sensoring will not stop it.

As long as those Westboro Baptist wackos are running around the country uncensored, desecrating America's best and bravest... Hey, I got an idea! How about censoring gangsta rap? That sounds fair to me. You can censor the skinheads and the gang bangers!

People always seem to forget that the motto for Rock is "Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll"

And what kind of pansy-ass has something wrong with that?

I think you're referring to me, but I was using rock music as a point to everyone saying that rap music is terrible because of it's themes. Hell, Johnny Cash wrote songs about getting coked up. I've heard plenty of rock songs "which degrades women, promotes drugs and violence" as Lanikai puts it. I'm fine with it. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Ah, no, no. I was just continuing your point. People are so critical of Rap for being pro-drug and sex, despite the fact that a lot of Country, Rock, Metal, and Punk bands have the exact same kind of lyrics. Naming all the high-profile rockstars who were notorious (and loved) for their rampant drug-use and sexual adventures would take all day.

A person is free to speak as they wish; sing as they wish; and publish the literature they wish. Assuming, however, those words are not a crime. Assault is an act that causes another to apprehend immediate and personal violence and assault is a crime. As I understand English (and American) common law...hate speech does not constitute assault unless the speaker makes a simultaneous show of force....this suggests laws making it illegal for someone who delivers hate speech to purchase weapons would be constitutional....as the acquisition of weapons would be the act which turns the hate speech into assault.

No, banning just gives it "credibility" - "look they ban us cos they know we tell the truth"
Let them sing their silly hate songs and they just show how ignorant they are.

No. People always want to find a reason for these things and sometimes there are no reasons. Being a white supremecist doesn't make someone a mass murdered, being insane does. Censorship will not change this.

The price you pay for a "FREE" society. No different then the New Black Panthers, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or Louis Farakans message of hate towards those they label "White Devils" (which is basically all Whites).

    Never for censorship.

Even more alarmed when "hate" is the justification. That is way too arbitrary a term to trust to the legal system even if you support specific censorship; if you're pro-censorship at least be specific enough about what you want banned not to get bitten in the ass yourself when a courts interpret your language.

Better yet, don't support government censorship at all. Instead support the rights of business owners to stock, or refuse to stock, what they choose. Then go talk to your local store owners about how they exercise that freedom (odds are you're on the same side). This also avoids attracting more attention to those products.

People need to hate hate. That changes the person to love despising hatred. That will choke off the one making it making it unprofitable to make it thus stop making it having them dry up like a shallow stagnant pond.

The song cop killer was in protest at the brutality and racism of the LAPD which as we all know would end up igniting the LA riots. A lot of that album speaks out against racism and prejudice.

Ice T is not racist, as I said a lot of that album speaks out against prejudice. The LAPD was corrupt and there was a lot of institutionalised racism which is what led to it.
