Sikh Temple Massacre Casts Light on White-Power Rock: Censor Hate Music?

The murderer who killed six members of the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin founded a white-power rock group in 2005. This connection exposed a link between hate groups and their music, which includes lyrics of hateful acts toward minorities, Jews and non-whites.

Marilyn Mayo monitors hate groups for the Anti-Defamation League. Mayo told the AFP, "Hate music helps bring haters together into a shared community." Hate groups and their members meet through hate music and hate-music festivals.

“Racist music is what keeps the movement young” and sets it apart from the image of white-hooded Ku Klux Klan members “sitting on the front porch with a shotgun,” said one-time skinhead Frank Meeink on MSNBC television. Do you think hate music should be censored? Will censoring this type of music prevent tragedies like the Wisconsin massacre from happening?

As much as I despise the speech, it's free speech. The same tests apply as for any speech.

It doesn't really matter WHAT I tell you he did, you'll play it off as "right wing BS" and disregard it.

Upholding affirmative action for one, I'm sorry, you live life by the writ of your actions, NOT by the color of your skin, If you do well in school, you get the grants and scholarships, it shouldn't be that you get it just because your asian, or german, or african american, or swedish.

By your actions shall you be judged, by your actions shall you succeed, by your actions shall you fail.

But what the hell do I know, I'm just a bloody Independent Russian.

    TANSTAAFL and good day.

Ok so let me get this straight, you are calling Obama racist for something that happened in 1961? The year he was born? SO let me ask you a question every president since 1961 that upheld affirmative action, did you call them RACIST?
  • Xed0 Meako 2012/08/18 20:53:45

WRONG, look up the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

At face value its a good idea, but in actuality it panders to someone over skin color and not their academic work. Entitlement as it were, I'm sorry but I despise all forms of entitlement, this country was founded upon the back of hard work and responsibility, why change that now?

Because someones upset and jealous of what others have?

I was referring to academic affirmative action btw(apologies for the generalization). I do not think you should be granted special rights because of whats between your legs, or what your melanin content is.

Equal rights means equal responsibilities, you want to go to that fancy college? Work hard in school, keep your grades up, don't turn around and say "Oh I'm an underprivileged american, I want into MIT even though my GPA is 2.2, your just not letting me in because I'm black/female/asian/german/rus... There is NO such thing as underprivileged, only under-responsible.
  • Meako Xed0 2012/08/18 21:26:01
    Meako
Sorry to bust your bubble, but everyone that gets into MIT is there because of their grades FIRST... you aren't getting in there with a 2.2 no matter what...

Second you are not referring to affirmative action... Obama is doing this because blacks test lower. I think a good leader should get to the core and find out whats going on, that's not racism that's being a good leader...

He also set up a task force to look into young Chinese Americans being thrown into the sex trafficking in the USA, is that racism also? Or are you just concerned when its a black person?

And here we go, i state an opinion, you call me a racist....Prolly because I'm a white male.

Also i suggest you look into affirmative action, that IS what he is doing, I believe you should get the merits of your work. Someone who tests low obviously didn't study hard enough, and don't give me any bunk about it being because of a shoddy school system.

I used to work as a janitor and substitute teacher in inner city st louis schools, By God there is a damn good reason those kids test low....because they don't give a rats ass about their education most of the time, I had ONE student that actually listened, I gave him all the time i could afford outside school(HE is going places, is going to school for the same degree I am, aerospace engineering). I will say there are some teachers who make the best of it, but the human mind is capable of overcoming anything(it amazes me people are unable to overcome their liberalness, i think thats just stubbornness though).

I agree everyone should be able to pursue a good education, but Never should they be allowed to get it without first earning it.If they earn it, more power to them, but if they do not....

This is just another example of entitlement clouding the masses judgment, feed them a sad sob story and they come to coddle you.

Also that task force has been around since the late 80's, all obama did was change the name and "voice his support" for the program.

BTW, You should think about getting a Job at the new york fisheries, all that red herring tossing your doing would qualify you for a WONDERFUL position with them.

Also you DID call me a racist.

And I quote; "Or are you just concerned when its a black person?"

    Implied racism, is still racism.

But enough with the semantics, I will stand by my statement, If you didn't earn it, you don't deserve it.

  • Xed0 Meako 2012/08/28 07:36:33

aha but you CAN earn things at the age of 5, at least I was taught at that age you had to earn the things you wanted, most others probably were not.

My grandmother lived through the dustbowl, she was one of the main people in my early life "waste not want not" and "earn your bread" were common sayings around me during my early years.

Whats really funny? I had open heart surgery when i was two years old(don't believe me I'll show you the scars and the 5 belly buttons)! I was "handicapped" as it were as a youngster, but i STILL managed to earn my keep.

I have no need to try something again that I have already won....see thats what my GRANDFATHER taught me, Fight for it once, keep it forever.

I DID have a good education when I was 5, its called proper parenting.

Sadly many don't know what this even is these days.

By the time i was 7 I had a very good grasp of reproduction and anatomy, as well as a good aim.

Early education should come from both books and hands on learning.

Small wonder i graduated High school at 16 and had a bachelors degree by the time i was 20.

Also, you learn well through hard work, but what would you know about that? Ever had to plant and harvest your own food? How about track kill and cook it?

I was doing all that by the time I was 8,but thats what happens when you live off the land, your taught how to survive and how to think.

Most 8 year olds these days can barely track a twinkie and the television remote down.

You would be surprised how many of us "southern folks" are above average afa intelligence goes.

I do however agree that everyone should be able to get a good education, the college system is a damn joke :\

e very definition of free society is that we can do whatever we want as long as it brings NO harm to anyone! and hate speeches DO bring harm to people! if it doesn't cause someone to go out and shoot someone, if the hated pople might commit suicide, etc!

i bet you people who say this shoul;d not be banned under free speech are the same who would fight touth in nail saying we need to wear seat belts! seriously!
  • nbarton2 democoach 2012/08/13 03:36:57 (edited)
    nbarton2
If we ban this type of music than we should go as far to ban music that is hateful towards women as well, get rid of songs that call women, whore, bitch and other names that are derogatory and give youth and others a negative impression of women and how men should treat and interact with them. Since this brings harm to society as well. I believe in free speech and I believe in seat belt laws but I've never seen anyone thrown through a window going 70 miles an hour while not wearing a song so I'm not sure how those equate.

As much as I despise racists, I can't say censor it. It will only move underground and we wouldn't know what we will be dealing with then, best let them be out in the open, so we can keep an eye on them. (Okay, I was being sarcastic, but seriously, these racists are kinda scary and sick.)

Define hate. Hatred of authority. Hatred of government. Hatred of politicians. Hatred of police. Hatred of ex-lovers. Hatred of religion(s). Hatred of drug users. Hatred of parents. Hatred of the media. Hatred of the music industry. Oh wait, that's about half of today's music. The government is already on the fence with censorship of cuss-words in music and if it violates free speech or not. Let's not mess things up for the majority of us non-haters.

If the anti-Semitics and racists are smart, they'll stay hidden in their basements. Moves like this will just get them eradicated by the rest of us.

Conservatives (or at least social conservatives/church lady types) are probably the most inclined towards censorship. Also of note is defining 'censorship'. Both liberals and conservatives are quick to call 'criticism', boycotts and other issues 'censorship'. My view is that censorship is when a governmental body restricts free speech. In general, there's enough hypocrisy to go around for both political leanings.

Interesting how gays united massively to boycott Chick-Fil-A in objection to the owner's thoughts on gay marriage, yet when Starbucks came out in favor of it, not a whisper from the right.
  • BigFig#9 Bill 2012/08/13 17:41:29
    BigFig#9
Probably because even deep down in their hearts many conservatives realize this is a Human Rights question that they are on the losing side of... Just like nobody is going to oppose a company that supports rights for women and minorities, nobody is opposing Starbucks for supporting Marriage Equality. Just like any company opposing women's or minority rights, Chick-Fil-A has aroused boycott and anger with their position on Marriage Equality. Or it could be that conservatives are more addicted to caffeine than liberals are to bad fast food. There are several conservative organizations that attempt to boycott various products but my take on them is that they find too many issues to boycott and have lost and focused interest. Search Google conservative boycotts and you'll find a good list of ineffective boycott efforts by American Family Association and others.(PS - Personally I think these types of boycotts on either side are silly, ineffective and often counter-productive on an organized level until a company's behavior reaches a much more egregious level - Nestle comes to mind.)
