Should Young Celebrities Go to College?

For most young people, college is an expensive but ultimately worthwhile investment of time and money. However, for today's young celebrities choosing whether or not to go to college is a bit more complicated.

Some, like Emma Watson, who quit Brown University to enroll at Oxford, decide that college is worth it.

"I've had to say no to stuff that people have been gobsmacked about. I've had big directors say to me, 'What do you mean, you can't do this movie? We don't understand,'" the actress, now 21, said recently by phone from her native England. "I always hear, 'What do you mean she can't do this magazine cover?' or 'What do you mean she can't have this meeting for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?' And my agent will say, 'She's at school, sorry.'

"Yes, it's hard for me to turn down amazing opportunities. But I've been working solidly since I've been 9 years old. So for me, to have this space to learn and figure myself out a bit is obviously worth it."

Others, like Blake Lively, choose to focus on their careers.

"Everybody said, 'Strike while the iron is hot.' And everybody is so replaceable these days that to maintain your 'heat,' or whatever, you are supposed to put aside school," said Lively, who's now 23 and building a film career, including roles in last year's "The Town" and next weekend's "Green Lantern."

"One of the reasons why wanted to do 'Gossip Girl' was because we had talked about giving me one day a week to go to Columbia starting the second season, once things slowed down. But things never slowed down. The show took off, and they were never able to carve out the time in my schedule. It still makes me sad every day that I didn't have that college experience."

What do you think? Is it important for young celebrities to get a college education?

If they're smart enough. Natalie Portmann was a child actress, but she didn't get drunk off fame, she graduated Harvard Law. Those are the actors and actresses you can look up to.

What was the last thing Tiffany or Debbie Gibson released? Big back in the day, but music can be a very fickle business. Here today, gone tomorrow.

I think it should be law that says if you are out of high school you can not act for 2 years . That is why they do to people in the NBA.

Said no because there is no other option.

It needs to be a personal choice. Fact is that around 20% of college students drop out before graduating. Out of the ones that do graduate more than 50% cannot get a job in their field of study. Many then go on to get their masters in order to defer the student loan payments. This all being said is it really " a worthwhile investment of time and money".

Being an actor is a fickle thing. One day you are on top and the next, no one knows who you are. Its best to have something to fall back on.

Everyone should go to college and get an education. Learning is more important that anything you ever do in life and what you draw from the knowledge you learn, will help guide you throughout life enabling you to make educated, intelligent decisions. There is a certain maturity that is developed when you study, do research, hand in papers on time to meet deadlines, all while learning about history, art, music, literature and the world around you in general. So yes, everyone should have that experience. They can act and do what they want, but being a stupid, uneducated rich and famous person isn't going to make them happy, or allow them to continue to earn a living later on in life. Now, being a teacher, of course this is my point of view. LOL.

Who knows, maybe they don't want to act their whole lives. Sure it pays well but it's just not for everybody so going to college is probably a good thing. It helps them explore the rest of their abilities and who really knows, they might even find that there's something else out there that they want to do. I think it's really cool of Emma Watson to be going to college.

Ultimately it is their own decision. If a person does not want to go to college they shouldn't have to.

Hooray for Emma Watson for focusing on her studies and hooray for Blake Lively for focusing on her career (whoever the hell that is).

Emma is much more of her own person than Blake is. She is thinking for herself and he is doing what his handlers tell him to do.

Just look at the difference between her and Lively's comments. It is so nice to see a child star that has it together!

I don't know who he is in particular, but he was the second celebrity quoted on this post. The one who chose career over education. I suppose either is a valid choice, but I think an education helps you to become a stronger person, to know yourself and your value, and not accept being the victim of circumstance or other people. I think this skill would be very important for child stars, who so notoriously self destruct at an early age.
