Should Young Celebrities Go to College?

For most young people, college is an expensive but ultimately worthwhile investment of time and money. However, for today's young celebrities choosing whether or not to go to college is a bit more complicated.

Some, like Emma Watson, who quit Brown University to enroll at Oxford, decide that college is worth it.

"I've had to say no to stuff that people have been gobsmacked about. I've had big directors say to me, 'What do you mean, you can't do this movie? We don't understand,'" the actress, now 21, said recently by phone from her native England. "I always hear, 'What do you mean she can't do this magazine cover?' or 'What do you mean she can't have this meeting for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?' And my agent will say, 'She's at school, sorry.'

"Yes, it's hard for me to turn down amazing opportunities. But I've been working solidly since I've been 9 years old. So for me, to have this space to learn and figure myself out a bit is obviously worth it."

Others, like Blake Lively, choose to focus on their careers.

"Everybody said, 'Strike while the iron is hot.' And everybody is so replaceable these days that to maintain your 'heat,' or whatever, you are supposed to put aside school," said Lively, who's now 23 and building a film career, including roles in last year's "The Town" and next weekend's "Green Lantern."

"One of the reasons why wanted to do 'Gossip Girl' was because we had talked about giving me one day a week to go to Columbia starting the second season, once things slowed down. But things never slowed down. The show took off, and they were never able to carve out the time in my schedule. It still makes me sad every day that I didn't have that college experience."

What do you think? Is it important for young celebrities to get a college education?

I think that everyone should go to college. Kids who think they are above education because of their ability to act or be eye candy will eventually (and hopefully soon) realize that their time is up and they are left with limited options for the rest of their lives. Education should not be stopped by fame. Christ these kids have so much money, have them open a college for celebrities or something. At least then they will use their money for something wiser than alcohol/drug binges and "rehab facilities"

Why is this even a question? Since when has the decision for a young celebrity to go to college up to "normal people"?

Besides, Emma Watson is one of the few, most grounded young celebrities out there. She doesn't let the fame go to her head. Then again, when you don't live in Hollywood but in another country instead, it's not a hard thing to do, staying grounded.

ETA: Also, Dakota Fanning's going to NYU in the fall. She's another one that's got a good head on her shoulders. I don't know if she lives in Hollywood or not, but still.

If they want to. People like Emma Watson never have to work again and I think it's great that she is doing what really wants to do. It's better than partying and drinking/doing drugs all the time.

Where you start does not mean it's where you will end up. I suggest an education for everyone. That way you always have something to fall back on.

Most young celebrities don't become rich celebrities when they're older so having an education gives them something to fall back on, and can also help them stay a celebrity or cash in on it - so yes, can only be a good thing.

No but you certainly wont become smarter, or rather more knowledgeable. Unless your talking about a family business or you are a savant you really do need a college education to get far or even a decent job nowadays. Adults everywhere are going to colleges whether at the county or higher level in order to obtain a degree that could help them in their careers. To say you don't need a college education is ignorant. Higher Education is crucial to societal progress and change

You go to college to train in a profession. Then you can find a better more well-paying job. That is about it. If you don't go to college, it's not like your brain is just going to stop and like the other person said 'become dumb'. *Not* going to happen. You make it sound like you are saying that if you don't go to college your brain will just stay on pause. And, com'on now I think everyone should know that isn't true. Saying that you don't need a college education is not ignorant. Everyone's life has a path, and some people just don't have college on theirs. Not a big deal. So sure maybe they wont have a high-paying job and whatever, but for some people money isn't everything. And for others it is. But hey if you are happy and doing just fine then good for you. Societal progress and change does not depend on every single person going to college. Now I say that is ignorant.

Yes you do. And in this day and age even a volunteer can get farther with a degree in a field that could . I would love to travel around the world and volunteer in every country i can. If i have a degree in human services or psychology the possibilites will be much easier to come by than if I just went and said "i want to volunteer." and higher education is VERY important I dont know where you have been. Not only for a job. Society will not progress if the majority of the upcoming generations feel college is optional, We will become stagnant. We have enough problems already.
  • [Katsu]™ Josh Ma... 2011/06/13 21:31:58

I never once said that it was not important. It will progress. Everyday we progress. Why are you even trying to start a debate with me? I was never even talking about what you are talking about now.

Everyone should go to college. Then with an education people won't be fooled as easily as they are now. Example..Let's re-elect te same people who sold America cause they say they have changed.

If they want to, that is. The most used purpose of college today is to get a degree so you can find a job. These celebrities already have some of the most prestigious and high paying jobs, but that's not all college has to be for. A love of learning is a gift that everyone should have.
