Should Young Celebrities Go to College?

For most young people, college is an expensive but ultimately worthwhile investment of time and money. However, for today's young celebrities choosing whether or not to go to college is a bit more complicated.

Some, like Emma Watson, who quit Brown University to enroll at Oxford, decide that college is worth it.

"I've had to say no to stuff that people have been gobsmacked about. I've had big directors say to me, 'What do you mean, you can't do this movie? We don't understand,'" the actress, now 21, said recently by phone from her native England. "I always hear, 'What do you mean she can't do this magazine cover?' or 'What do you mean she can't have this meeting for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?' And my agent will say, 'She's at school, sorry.'

"Yes, it's hard for me to turn down amazing opportunities. But I've been working solidly since I've been 9 years old. So for me, to have this space to learn and figure myself out a bit is obviously worth it."

Others, like Blake Lively, choose to focus on their careers.

"Everybody said, 'Strike while the iron is hot.' And everybody is so replaceable these days that to maintain your 'heat,' or whatever, you are supposed to put aside school," said Lively, who's now 23 and building a film career, including roles in last year's "The Town" and next weekend's "Green Lantern."

"One of the reasons why wanted to do 'Gossip Girl' was because we had talked about giving me one day a week to go to Columbia starting the second season, once things slowed down. But things never slowed down. The show took off, and they were never able to carve out the time in my schedule. It still makes me sad every day that I didn't have that college experience."

What do you think? Is it important for young celebrities to get a college education?

They are role models to people all across the world. Of course they should get a college degree. It actually kind of irritates me that Hollywood stars are so much more universally influential than people high up the education ladder, who are usually only renowned in their own fields...

Yes, I totally believe if it is a goal for them, then they need to strive for it.
Every person should set and acheive as many goals in life as possible.

I bet college would be more affordable at the 2 years they are willing to devote to studies than the 4+ presently dribbled away on campus.

they already probably have a high work ethic - making movies is not an easy task.

they spend lots of time memorising lines, all things that might hold them in good stead for college life. Being able to pay for some top class tutors from time to time might help as well...

    I say go!!!

If they can make the grade. They may need something to fall back on, they aren't going to be young forever.
    Have a good one !

I think is a good thing... I mean it's not mandatory, many people whom are not celebriies and don't even have a job don't go to college, but as a celebrity, going to college is a plus in your CV and it also it's a chance to share real-world experience that you can't afford to loose. If they don't want to pursue their acting, singing career they can continue doing what they graduated in college for...
For example, one of my favourite actresses/directors, Jodie foster, graduated Magna Cum Laude (one of the highest honours) at Yale University.... She's a woman I DO admire! :)

i definitly think young celebs should get a further education because just because you have a caree as a child does not mean you will have one as an adult and if you make enough money to live comfortably you should remember that with living comfortably comes bordom and with that comes awesome things like gambling and drugs which usually lead to sucessful teenagers or children stars becoming poor has beens instead of wealthy has beens

WHO CARES! (But if you want to get an education, it doesn't matter what field of work you're in.) The question here should be: Should people who already have money need to go to college to learn how to do what they are already doing, making money. We go to college to better ourselves.

everyone needs an education. She's smart, she's at Oxford, and they're an ivy league school. what's so bad about a celebrity going off to LEARN even if they still act, they might learn something useful in their schooling.

i think it's helpful because lets face it one minute in hollywood you could be the greatest thing since swiss cheese and two flop movies later everyone has forgotten your name. it's a harsh business and having something to fall back on is a great idea.

Getting an education can never be a bad thing. I'm very pro-education. Gaining knowledge about the world is one of the most important things a person can do. I am very impressed with Emma. She is clearly not just one of those actresses who think, "hey I've got money, why do I need to learn stuff?" That is such an ignorant view.

A good education never hurt anyone, even if they have enough money in the bank to make sure even their grandkids can live comfortable lives without having to work.

I personally think it's a good idea. An actress, or actor can say one wrong thing, like, "I support Sarah Palin" for example, and their career in movies and television is over.

Of course they should, if that's what they want to do.

Emma Watson, for example, auditioned for the first Harry Potter movie when she was nine. I doubt she knew whether she wanted to go to college at that point, and even if she did, I'm sure she had no idea how famous she was going to be when the time came for her to do it. I just don't think it should have to be, 'oh, I was in some really big movies and everyone probably expects me to be in some more, so I'll just forget about everything else I might want to do' for ANYONE. That isn't fair.

In answer to the heading question: if that's their choice, of course they should.
In answer to the final question "Is it important for young celebrities to get a college education?": again, yes. The education is important, and since they usually have the funds, they shouldn't squander the opportunity.
