Should Video Games Have ‘Girlfriend Mode’?

Girlfriend mode on video games? Is this a joke? In a recent interview with Eurogamer, lead game designer John Hemingway revealed a new skill tree called "Best Friends Forever," which is a mode designed to make things easier for people who can't aim as high as more skilled gamers.

And what does Hemingway casually refer to this mode as? Girlfriend mode. Wow. Way to set us back a few decades, dude. Do you think it's OK for video games to have a "girlfriend mode"?

THEFRISKY.COM reports:
You’d think that by 2012 game designers would have stopped insulting our intelligence by giving us female characters with gigantic conical boobs and tiny there’s-no-way-she-has-any-internal-organs waists. You’d think they would have created some virtual woman we can get behind. You’d especially think that since it’s been shown female gamers outnumber male gamers, designers would respect their audience and do everything in their power not to alienate us. Well, of course you’d be wrong.

Here we go with the dumbass "trolling", nobody is trying to troll you. Spelling wasn't a comeback because there was no arguement, in order for me to comeback at you, we would have to be in an arguement. Hence proving my point you can't spell, and I bet after I declared that you couldn't spell you made sure that you spelled everything properly, too bad you suck at grammar, you used its improperly. (this would be considered trolling) Anyway your first comment about girlfriend mode wasn't funny, which is why I put "shakin ma head".

You assume a lot dont you. Lol. My statement stands and it is was and forever will be funny. :)

Also you are not very good at trolling.

What do you get, nobody is actually attempting to troll you. Your one of those asses that try and troll people by saying another person can't troll, it's stupid and not funny. Oh that's just like your comment.

sorry, but it's argument not 'arguement'. please don't criticise other people's spelling if you are so careless with your own. have a nice day.

I think it's a great idea, but maybe it should be called something else just to curb the butthurt. I think borderlands has this mode, but it's the kind of game that can get away with it because of its sense of humor. Also, here's a character from the game

curb butthurt borderlands mode game humor character game

While her breasts are enormous, she's not overly sexualized, and they're kind of only that big to keep it proportionate. Anywhoodle, yes. I think this is a great idea. Also, I'd like to see where the statistic "More girls than guys are gamers" came from.

    EDIT:

Here's the article about where the issue came up. the official name isn't "girlfriend mode" it was a joke that was taken the wrong way. Educate yourselves here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tec...

Don't call it "girlfriend" mode. There are plenty of people who can't play video games girls and boys mind you and its somewhat an insult by calling it "girlfriend" mode. I know plenty of girls who kick ass in video games and I happen to be one of them. Plus they already have a mode like this its called Beginner

Sexism is A-okay, but if it were racist and called something like "black-person mode" that implied black people were automatically inferior at video games, heads would roll. For some reason, sexism is still condoned in society (mostly in small and subtle ways, like this "joke") but racism is taboo. Looks like sexism has some catching up to do.

It would be different if it was called 'Toddler option' seeing as every person on Xbox live seems to be a little arrogant boy who hasn't gone through puberty. But girlfriend mode? PLEASE. I kick my boyfriend's ass at multiple video games.

It should have an "easy" option, but that wouldn't necessarily be called "girlfriend mode." I've known a few female gamers, and they're as skilled, well-practiced, and hardcore as ANY male gamer I've ever known.

I'd like to see him take me on in certain games and then decide what he should call that mode.
Name the game. Lately I've been kickin' a$$ and takin' names at Left 4 Dead, but I'm up for anything.

Why not call it easy Mode like normal people. It's degrading and sexist, to call it 'girlfriend' mode. The gamer world, and the nerd world in general tend already see girls in the culture as a rarity and as If we aren't good enough or only there to look good. This is just going to add to that stereotype. This is going to alienate female gamers farther.

Call it "easy mode" or "casual mode" or something not offensive to your users. I don't see why it could be considered funny, personally. And I only tolerate sexist comments if they make me laugh despite technically being a target of those comments.

    LMFAO

If you have ever played a video game with your girl friend. You will know exactly what I am talking about.

For those girls out there who can play video games and usually own my ass. Imagine playing with one of your more 'popular' school mates. Yeah, that's the problem the rest of us experience more often than not.

The girls who aren't bad at playing games should immediately see the funny side of this anyway =3

Also..point me to the research that shows that female gamers out number male gamers. Because my research indicates differently.

And were they girls who play video games regularly and who consider themselves gamers? Or were they girls whose only experience with games are Farmville and Angry Birds?

Some female gamers suck just like some male gamers suck, but if you don't even play games to start with naturally your suck-factor will be pretty high.

That's insulting and stupid. How about just creating different levels for players of various skill levels? Whatever happened to easy, medium, hard? There's no need to be derogatory towards women. The video gaming industry has already done enough to alienate women who play games- this is just over the top.
