Should Video Games Have ‘Girlfriend Mode’?

Girlfriend mode on video games? Is this a joke? In a recent interview with Eurogamer, lead game designer John Hemingway revealed a new skill tree called "Best Friends Forever," which is a mode designed to make things easier for people who can't aim as high as more skilled gamers.

And what does Hemingway casually refer to this mode as? Girlfriend mode. Wow. Way to set us back a few decades, dude. Do you think it's OK for video games to have a "girlfriend mode"?

THEFRISKY.COM reports:
You’d think that by 2012 game designers would have stopped insulting our intelligence by giving us female characters with gigantic conical boobs and tiny there’s-no-way-she-has-any-internal-organs waists. You’d think they would have created some virtual woman we can get behind. You’d especially think that since it’s been shown female gamers outnumber male gamers, designers would respect their audience and do everything in their power not to alienate us. Well, of course you’d be wrong.

I like everything healthy, when my tummy is happy. I am happy too! Though I must concur. I don't eat cucumbers for their taste.

Only as a joke. I would call it something different if it's a more serious game or whatever.

Should it be called that? No.

There's always been an "easy" mode, and it should remain that way.

Great idea, wish they had something like this years ago, when I couldn't play my son without either kicking his ass, or being bored crapless, and now that he's gotten better than me, it would be cool for it to do the reverse. A mode where it auto adjusted the difficulty on each of us, where we were challenged, and but in the end ended up within a few points of each other.

That's sexist and wrong. Their are girls out their who can kick a guys @$$ any day on a video game. Girls can do just as good if not better as men.

Why not call it "NOOB MODE"?

i'd say 50/50 girls and boys are equal at video games you just can't say boys are naturally good at games or the same with girls we all learn the ropes before we'r good at something

Sure. I noticed that it is mostly juveniles who are being taught PC in public school that claim that it is "sexist".

FYI, used to be (in normal world) most guys wanted a girl that acted like a girl. They wanted a girl that they could take care of--protect.

This isn't political correctness. It's the idea that women don't have the ability to operate a video game because they possess a vagina. And why should women make themselves fragile and 'girly' just to get a guy?

It shouldn't be called 'girlfriend mode', girls aren't any less likely to be good at video games. And then there is the already existing 'Easy mode'. Adding a whole new difficulty level for girlfriends is a little insulting.

I do not play those video games. I can think of better ways to spend my money, like a night out with my girlfriend, which I believe would be far more considerate than a "girlfriend mode" on any video game. How about this for a girlfriend mode; draw water for a bubble bath, place candles around the tub and invite her to join you, then give her a sensuous drying off. There is no need to say anymore.

I doubt the guy really thinks girls are worse gamers, it is just a joke. Yesterday I was picking out underwear and there were some girl boxers called "Boyfriend cut" or something similar. Should I start ringing the sexist bell on that?
It's not like guys can't use this mode or that girls have to use it. In fact its name is probably suited for many people who will use it-that is, the girlfriends of video-game playing guys who want to start playing with their partner but aren't very good yet.
However, for the sake of not alienating any of the video game audience, I'd suggest they just rename "girlfriend mode" "easy mode".

By boyfriend cut they mean that they were cut for a boy because boys and girls have different bodies. As far as I'm aware both boys and girls can play a game the same.

Actually, what they meant by "Boyfriend cut" was that it was a style usually worn by men(ie boxers), but in this instance worn by females. Yet you don't see people upset over how sexist it is to say boxers shouldn't be stereotypical as guys cloth because plenty of women also like them.

At what point does saying "This is a girl thing" or "This is a guy thing" become sexist. The guy has a personal nickname for the mode. For all we know he could have named it with a specific girlfriend in mind. No one is actually saying girls can't play video games. People need to stop looking for things to get insulted over.

Well if you think this is a stupid idea.., you haven't seen anything yet... This is just another example of the double standard of protectionism currently in place here in America for women...

Women claim to want to be equal yet compensation is constantly being applied to make things easier for women...I have spoke on this matter on numerous occasions, and my point then and now is.., no one can be considered equal only when compensations are made.. By default when compensations are made that makes the recipients unique or special. Any time affirmative action is a part of the equation..., equal is council out by default....

I personally feel women need to stop wanting to be a part of something just so they can say they have access. Example.., why do women reporters feel a need to go into a males locker room and not expect to be exposed to what goes on in that environment... It is completely dumb for anyone to want to be involved in activity and that which you want to be involved with must change in order for you to participate

Ladies when you get on board and catch up based on your own merit oppose to demanding the world change around you.., others.., not all but most will find it easier to embrace your equality...

It might very well be a man's world..., however.., it's not...

Many of the girls and women who play video games are just as good if not better than their male counterparts. If you think you are better than your girlfriend. Play her in your favorite game. Make sure you don't hide the manual so she can read it so there is no disadvantage. Then take her on. There are some girls that are not into them at all, those would probably not fair well. But any who are familiar with playing them may very well wipe the floor with you.

Referring to the concept of a super easy mode for unexperienced people, yes I think it should be there. Many times I found myself playing with buddies that were not gamers adn thus couldn't really play alongside, and the other way around when I played games that I was not used to.

About the terminology though, while I can see where it came from (since let's face it, most gamers are still males and in many cases their GF aren't as skilled), considering how more and more women become gamers nowadays, it's kind of insulting, since, while you'll find girlfriends sucking at videogames, you'll also find some that kickass, and also the other way around with boyfriends sucking at videogames.

All in all, yes for the mode (as long as it doesn't compromise the core/normal game), but pick another terminology.
