Should the NBA Have an Age Limit?

NBA Commissioner David Stern is firm on a lot of rules and regulations -- most recently the NBA's age limit. For a few years now, the NBA has enforced an age limit of 19 and up, in order for a college basketball player to be eligible for the NBA Draft. In fact, Stern wants to add another year to his controversial age limit.

"We would love to add a year, but that's not something that the players' association has been willing to agree to," Stern said in recent interviews with the media. "They would probably say, 'What would you give us?'" Of course, the last thing Stern wants is more conflict with the players' association, after coming off of a long, stressful lockout that resulted in a shortened regular.

While many may appreciate Stern's commitment to rules, others will argue that if an 18-year-old can get a full-time job right out of high school, then they should be able to play professional basketball -- if they are good enough -- or if a team thinks they are. With the age limit, it leads to various "one-and-done" college players such as Derrick Rose, who while exciting and accomplished, may hurt collegiate programs in the long run. Should the NBA lift it's age ban once and for all?

i think its should be 18 and up just like porn and the military but you would be a dumbas$ to pass up a free college education.College = the best years of your life and a good education plays a fundamental role in your success in life

Eliminate the age limit and just make a rule that college players have to graduate before eligibility.

I think if you're good enough to be in the NBA then what does it matter how old you are? Age doesn't really make a difference.

10 would probably be good, otherwise let them use the same laws I worked under when I was ten in California. The laws were written for kids in acting but never said that, so applied to all of us. A clause that was never used in my case was if the job interfered with my normal schooling in any manner the employer was required to furnish tutors that were adequate to keep me performing at my expected grade level until I was 18-years-old and had a high school diploma.

Well.. Many people say that must be an age limit in basketball teams .... But in my opinion thts wrong for example we can see a pro player and he is 50 years old but he stills good by his experience in this field and we can see a just kid has 15 years old but he is pro its his talent maybe he was born for this sport so we cant make an age limit in any sport

No one under 18- they can not legally sign a contra t.

What I would like to see is where they only draft seniors- this would ensure a kid completes their obligation for the school that is footing their "education"(and for most of these thugs, actually learning anything is a minor miracle) and hopefully get them to start realizing you honor the contract you sign

Keep it as it is, any older would be ridiculous. I don't even quite agree with not allowing kids to go to the NBA out of high school. For one, it was hardly a problem cuz the number of kids who went to the NBA out of high school was very low anyway. I say if they can play, let them play. This notion that they have to go to college is dumb, it's just like any other job, if you can have a job you love, that pays great, and you don't have to waste the time and money going to college...why would you? College is a giant waste of money anyway and highly over-rated.

Presumably these few guys are on scholarship, so for a future "employer" to require 2 years of college AT LEAST doesn't seem harsh to me. They could use the maturity, the playing time, the education. They can wait till they're 20 to become gazillionaires.

Absolutely. Make these kids do the full four years in college for two reasons. One, so that when they fail to make it in the NBA, they will have a degree to fall back on. Two, so that the level of play in the NBA will increase dramatically. Waaaayyyyyy to many of these kids that come out early are drafted on their potential 3-4 years from now. The owners have to play them right away to justify the enormous contracts they are given, but the majority of these kids are not close to being ready to start in the League. That's why we have sloppy, boring, street ball instead of how the game used to be played properly not 20 years ago.

One year of college is enough. It would be sweet if there were more of a reason for players to stay in college and finish out their years but ... there isn't, so don't increase the age limit.

Yes, they definitely should. Not just the NBA but all professional sports should have an age requirement of 21 for athletes to play professionally. Being talented isn't everything. Maturity has a lot to do with it as well. Whether they admit it or not, these guys are role models to young kids. Thus, I think someone should be a mature adult to play in professional sports.

Needs to be 21. To be in that 'business', maturity is required, and many do not have it.

The NBA is a business. If they want to impose a 19 year old age limit.. that is their right.

The colleges benefit and the NBA benefits from this..

Could you imagine some of these kids without a College Coach there prior to the NBA. We would have "The Last Boy Scout" coming true.

Why is it that sports that are predominantly Black are trying to enforce age restrictions?

We never hear about these types of restrictions for MLB, golf, tennis, or even soccer.

    It is about the money.

Right. And the players see none of that money. At least in pro sports if your team has a major t.v. deal players see some of that money.

Key word is some. Personally I hate Pro Baskeball.. I would never watch it. This way the network gets 2x.

The NBA also gets to weed out those that are billed right out of high school but really don't mature. It same the NBA millions and then the kids flounder in the collegiate ranks.

    Its a win/win.

Personally.. I want to know where the law is that says a high school student must go to college immediately after high school. What about those that join the armed services. Those that decide to work a year or travel. It just so happens these kids can earn 20 mill and then go back to school. What is wrong with that?
