Should the NBA Have an Age Limit?

NBA Commissioner David Stern is firm on a lot of rules and regulations -- most recently the NBA's age limit. For a few years now, the NBA has enforced an age limit of 19 and up, in order for a college basketball player to be eligible for the NBA Draft. In fact, Stern wants to add another year to his controversial age limit.

"We would love to add a year, but that's not something that the players' association has been willing to agree to," Stern said in recent interviews with the media. "They would probably say, 'What would you give us?'" Of course, the last thing Stern wants is more conflict with the players' association, after coming off of a long, stressful lockout that resulted in a shortened regular.

While many may appreciate Stern's commitment to rules, others will argue that if an 18-year-old can get a full-time job right out of high school, then they should be able to play professional basketball -- if they are good enough -- or if a team thinks they are. With the age limit, it leads to various "one-and-done" college players such as Derrick Rose, who while exciting and accomplished, may hurt collegiate programs in the long run. Should the NBA lift it's age ban once and for all?

You don't want 90 year olds playing basketball unless they're Betty White... that woman can do anything

Kids need to get educated in school first. This includes those that try to get around it by playing in international competition before joining the NBA.

If your good enough to get into the big league you shouldn't have a limit because if your good people like going out to see you play your giving the NBA money so its a win,win situation

With a few exceptions, most of the young men coming out early are not mature enough, and they may have an outstanding season in college, but that might be a fluke year! And we all know that some agents will sell them "London Bridge!" to get them signed, and drop them like limburger chhese if they falter! The NBA should insist that potential players have to stay for at least two years, and that college athletic departments be required to teach a seminar course to all athletes about what happens if they leave school early, and their options, and information about where their draft status would be, and an assessment of their potential against their peers, in the field of their endeavors

i rather see the kid make some serious 'moolah' before he might get hurt...
too bad if he gets hurt at the college level....
after nba he can afford to go back to school later.

It's no different than some 15 yr old girl making millions playing tennis, or some 10 yr old starting in a movie. There should be a requirement of not only the parents being there but a child Advocacy lawyer helping the kid out - just to make sure the agents/owners aren't taking advantage of them.

Sadly .. the screen jumped ..
In a lot of ways .. it would be far better to RAISE the age instead ..
Too many times .. these kids .. are not even bothering with the Education part
(which is sad indeed .. those scholarships could better serve OTHER Kids .. who want to and will work hard for their DEGREES)..

I'm also for reforming the College Sports Scholarship process too ..
Too many times, talented scholars are NOT able to go to College ..
All because so much $$$$$ is going to those who will never and never had any intention of finishing any schooling.

Quit holding these kids back from making money. It's no different than some young kid on Disney making money for acting or some young kid making money cause they can sing. There is no age limit on that. Hell, there are elementary kids working as actors and actresses.

That video show guys who happen to play basketball fighting. That happens in every sport. So what's your point? You still haven't explained it. That video was worthless. There is an age limit in hockey. There is an age limit in football. They fight in those leagues too. Once again, your video was worthless and your comments have been dumb. You only proving that u know nothing.

The chances of acheiving advancement to the NBA are EXTREMELY small, no matter what the age. The most likely means for (legal) advancement in society is through education. Lowering the recruitment age will feed unrealistic dreams of bypassing the educational system in favor of a quick fix and will result in more and more uneducated kids feeling displaced by society because they are only able to obtain menial jobs. To prevent this, in my view all professional sport franchises should be restricted even further and only be permitted to recruit players who are legitimate college graduates.

My favorite barista at my local Starbucks has a 4yr degree in mechanical engineering - he graduated last year. A college degree does not equal success. PS - I have a diploma only and make about $100k a year doing construction work, it's dirty, hot, sweaty & noisy - only 1 in 20 people that start last a month.. can't handle the actual hard labor.

If the young man can compete at an age younger than 19, he should be able to do so. This will only happen in rare cases, so why the controversy?

The age limit for the N.B.A. should be 39. I hate seeing these 50 year old players, like Vince Carter, who can't even get up and down the court anymore.

I think if you can play that good at even 16 years old then why not? Also, I would like to see older players play even longer. John Stockton and Karl Molone were still one of the best point gaurd's and power forwards in the game, even in their 40's. John Stockton is around 50 now and still plays pick up games in Washington State with college kids almost everyday and still kicks their butt's at 50! I think they were the best and most durable point guard and power forward ever to play the game by far!

Stockton Malone Karl Malone John Stockton
