Should the Elderly Play Video Games?

When you think of a hardcore gamer, you're probably not picturing a 74-year-old man. But this 74-year-old man is thanking video games for keeping him alive. Actually, he's thanking "Resident Evil 4," specifically -- probably not the game you'd expect. According to Kotaku, Shiro Suzuki started gaming 15 years ago, when he got hooked on games like "Gradius," "Castlevania," and the "Resident Evil" series.

Suzuki recently attended a "Resident Evil" 15th anniversary event in Tokyo where he told the audience, "I owe making it to 74 years old to Resident Evil. I want other elderly people will play video games. It betters you as a human being." Words from the wise: He says he achieved his "Resident Evil 4" Mercenaries Mode high score (178,270 points) by getting enemies to group together, then lighting them on fire.

If I say no, that means I'll have to quit videogames some day. I'm not planning to, and I don't see why the elderly of today can't play videogames.

It really depends on the context. The question needs rewording into "Should they be allowed to" instead of "Should they", because no, not all should.

Do they have any idea whatsoever of what they're doing?
Then okay, that's just fine. I could even respect them.

Do they not even know the different between IE4 and IE7?
Then no, they possibly shouldn't even own an Atari.

I fail to see how one's knowledge of trivia concerning certain web browsers has anything to do with owning a video game console.

If you can't tell the difference between browsers then you probably can't tell the difference between a 360 controller and a PS3 controller. Or worse, PSN and XBL.

Such activities have been shown to help the elderly fight off dementia as well as retain manual dexterity. Hey, I wish my Gramp's and GrandMom was still around to play. It would be a hoot to see GrandMom puttin' a huttin" on Gramps !!!!! He,d go off in Geman and she.d reply in Russian and if my Mo,s side Grandma was there she,d be hootin" and encouraging G-Mom in Cherokee !!!!! Me, I,d be rolling on the floor trying to catch my breath !!!! I might have to take a hit off Gramp's Oxy bottle !!!!!

Why not; I recommend plenty of scotch, camels, fast cars with bald tires, tickets, plenty of tickets, one crazy wife, and never eat fast food; except Wendy's Chili. I'm 9 yrs past my life expectancy.

Better question, why shouldn't they be playing video games? They are keeping their minds and reflexes sharper than they would if they were just sitting in a rocking chair drugged up and bored.

Hells yeah! Why Not?! The Wii, Kinect, and Move are all ways that people could have fun and stay into shape or they could join the Call of Duty online gameplay with a bunch of teens and people in their 20's. Either way elderly people should play games too.

Should anyone waste their life on video games. There are so many wonderful things one could, and should be doing... Which are not in (the dream world) realm.

How about in a nursing home? Elderly people get bored after a while doing the same routine; trust me

I think your opinion has some truth. Video games are not good for anyone of any age. But if they're bored and have nothing to do in a nursing home, what should they do? Playing chess to them is probably too familiar...

My mother still living in her own home would not be able to see well enough for those games.Might be some who could. The really bored folks often cannot see hear or have enough mobility to play most of these games. I can see a limited application there however.

Video games not good for anyone of any age? what is that for humbug. There is nothing wrong with playing video games and it can certainly have physical and mental benefits. Especially with those new systems where you actually have to move.

*shrug* just saying, people should put physical activities first, like real life soccer or other sports (this is not for elderly people who can't, however). But I like video games and play them when I can.
