Should the Elderly Play Video Games?

When you think of a hardcore gamer, you're probably not picturing a 74-year-old man. But this 74-year-old man is thanking video games for keeping him alive. Actually, he's thanking "Resident Evil 4," specifically -- probably not the game you'd expect. According to Kotaku, Shiro Suzuki started gaming 15 years ago, when he got hooked on games like "Gradius," "Castlevania," and the "Resident Evil" series.

Suzuki recently attended a "Resident Evil" 15th anniversary event in Tokyo where he told the audience, "I owe making it to 74 years old to Resident Evil. I want other elderly people will play video games. It betters you as a human being." Words from the wise: He says he achieved his "Resident Evil 4" Mercenaries Mode high score (178,270 points) by getting enemies to group together, then lighting them on fire.

They'd get hurt? I had a sixty-three year old teacher that ran marathons. I'm pretty sure a game of bowling on the Wii would not harm her. Stereotypical, much?

If it makes then feel alive then there's no big deal. Let the elderly live it up when they already have a limited time left on Earth.

Stupid question really. Of course they should play. Videogames keep the mind sharp and improve one's cognitive abilities.

If they've lived 74 years already they can do whatever they want. Why shouldn't they ? That keeps your mind sharp....strategy, problem solving, all that exercises your brain and I think it can postpone the onset of Alzheimers.

Absolutely, yes! I'm 67, I play World of Warcraft, my avatar, here, is my character from Neverwinter Nights, and my hubby and I play Wii games, too. I would love to get an Xbox with Kinect for even more exercise and fun.

I don't think video games are age restricted...why the hell would it be? What's with all these age related questions lately? Does it have anything to do with BOCARE?

It's exercise (if it's a Wii or something like that system). If my 91 yo grandmother wasn't half deaf & only loved gardening & crosswords I'd get her to play some Wii bowling with me!

Why not???? It is good for dexterity, keeps the mind sharp, most can be interactive for workouts, and golf and other sports and such that they can do from the comfort of their own home. or heck have a get together, beats playing bingo.

Why not? I don't think I'd care to pick 'Resident Evil,' but if that man at his age wants to play it, its up to him. The one thing many younger people don't seem to get, is although you body seems to be falling to pieces, most older folks minds are not. In fact many older folks don't even think old, but more in their 30-50. Just ask one of them.

What a stupid question. What do you people think, that we lose our capacity to be humans after a certain age? 'Oh, I don't know if those elderly folk can handle this sort of thing.'......... SHEESH!

I will 61 in a few months, I have been playing x-box games since I was 50. I just got myself a new X-box kinect to keep up with the times.

So yes, 'the elderly' should play video games if they want to. We don't become a different species after a certain age ya know, Sodahead people.

Deb Thiessen Well said. It was a dumb thing to question. Why ever shouldn't anyone 1 to 100 play a game? Not like the old days when you had to wait in line at an arcade. I am beginning to think Sodahead SUCKS

I was a video game player when Atari was out with space invaders and pong. And then when tetris and Mario came out I played. After that, my life was too busy and I lost interest. I'm far from being elderly but I haven't had much interest in video games until the rock band, dance games, sports play (basically the ones that require physical play not just sitting and getting hand exercise.) I found out last year that I have arthritis and my daughter, who is an assistant manager at our local Game Stop, merched Deepak Chopra's Leela for me to try. I loved it! I plan on purchasing it soon as the dance games are getting too much for me to keep up with all the 20-somethings, LOL. I highly recommend it for those with limited mobility but who can still stand and walk on their own.

purchasing dance games 20-somethings lol highly recommend limited mobility walk

Thank you for your comment. I had no idea this existed. But I will buy a Wii just for this, in March of this year. I had to sell my Wii back in 2010 but will be getting another one again. (complete with the balance board). Great post!!!

I've played the Wii and the Kinect and I can tell you that the XBox 360 Kinect is better than the Wii in my opinion. Of course, it is your decision and this is just a review : )

They are the ONLY ones who should play video games. They have worked hard their whole lives and have earned that right. What has a snot nosed little cretan done to deserve "free" time to play?
