Should the Beach Boys Get Royalties for Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' Song?

Personally, I don't think anyone should have to pay royalties unless they sing the entire song and sell it. For a line, a verse, a riff, no. I'm not sure that I feel a 'royalty' is justified for even singing the entire song really. I think if the original person sings it well, they'll make big money and keep the bragging rights. If someone else sings it too and doesn't do it justice, they they won't. Just that simple. If the other person DOES sing it better, then that's too bad..they get the money from there. That's business. Does Quizno's pay Subway for 'mimicking' their business?, Does Burger King pay Mickey D's? Does Pepsi pay Coca Cola? Just cuz they're 'smacked' from recreating someone's song doesn't mean they won't get the fan and the cash. If they are good, they will get the money and the fans whether or not they sing their own or another. Basically tho, most real stars won't sing someone else's song unless paying tribute or respects to the originator for personal reasons...but not to just say " I can do it better" cuz they are more likely to want to show their talents in making their own songs. A true star wants to be 'original' ..and earn respect and bagging rights. A person could never get rich or respected if they only recreated songs. To me It seems like a desperate act by someone who is no longer is in the public eye and has lost their popularity over time. So? That's life.If nothing else, the recreation is breathing life back into the originators song causing people to look it up and listen to it 'once again' since being forgotten about. They should be flattered that someone likes their song enough to make it a part of theirs and keeps it going. It's free advertisement! The originator had made all the money they were going to upon launch-till-faded. It wasn't going to bring them any more cash once the thrill was gone anyways. In their minds, it was time to do a new song. Y take advantage of someone else who's sparked interest into the 'song of the past'?
