Should Sean Payton Appeal His Suspension?

New Orleans Saints head football coach Sean Payton hasn't yet decided whether he'll appeal his season-long suspension from the NFL, despite overwhelming support from many of his players -- including franchise quarterback Drew Brees. Payton, who coached the Saints to a Super Bowl championship in 2009, is currently suspended for lying to the NFL in regards to the team's bounty system that was put in place by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Williams is suspended indefinitely.

Many argue that it should be Payton who is suspended indefinitely, considering he is the head coach and knew defensive players were intentionally trying to send opponents to the hospital for illegal bonuses (illegal based on the agreement the NFL has with the players association).

However, as bad as Payton's actions (or lack thereof) are, his supporters will argue the SpyGate scandal involving the New England Patriots in 2007 had a far greater impact on the outcome of games, as head coach Bill Belichick and the organization were accused of spying and recording other teams' practices. Belichick was fined $500,000 (largest in league history at the time), but was not suspended by the NFL. Without an appeal in place, the Saints need to find a credible interim head coach during Payton's absence. Do you think Sean Payton should appeal his suspension?

To be honest - I am a 37-year Saints season ticket holder (48 yard line seats BTW) so I am a BIT prejudiced.

Payton allowed this to happen on his watch but Williams ran it. I truly believe that the whole mess started as a motivational tool for interceptions, causing fumbles, etc. It apparently devolved to rewards for "taking out" a player.

The reason I think Payton should appeal is that it Williams ran a similar system in Buffalo and other places before he came to the Saints. Yet he can ask for reinstatement at the same time Payton's year is up. I think Payton's punishment should be more like 8 games and $2 million.

He was aware it was going on and lied to the commissioner as part of attempt to cover it up. The penalty's a little stiff, but like the old saying goes "if you do the crime be prepared to do the time".

But he probably will. When my son played what we called pound ball, the 65 lb. league, they played some really rough little stinkers that would twist their ankles when they took our boys down. These were little guys, mine weighed about 38 lbs., and us moms were rightly upset. The offending team got in a lot of trouble, and this was about 28 years ago. So the bad sportsmanship has grown up and gone to the NFL, and it is time to pay the consequences!

It's crazy to think rewards for hits and exceptional effort won't continue, we had pizza vouchers in high school, special helmet stickers and other perks in college for hard hits. It’s how football works. The Saints players should make a stand for Payton.

NO, his ass needs to be fired and perhaps criminally charged with conspiring to endanger the well being of players on opposing teams.

Oh, please. Do you think that all teams don't try to hit a QB as hard as possible to disrupt his timing thru physical intimidation? Do you think player should ask the other player to "pretty please" fall down?

Football is inherently a tough, risky sport. Players endanger themselves every time the step out on the field.

Wow.... Your comment had nothing to do with what I was talking about. Paying bounties to take players out of a game is not the same as encouraging our players to intimidate or rough a player up. Stick with the topic my friend.

I am on topic. While the "bounties" were stupid and against NFL rules, it has ALWAYS been the goal of a player to hit the other guy as hard as he could. If they knocked the player out of the game, the chances of winning improved.

Take the Saints-Vikes 2009 NFC Championship. The Saints beat the crap out of Brett Favre. He was their biggest threat. The Saints kept Adrian Peterson in check. The Saints drew some roughing penalties. And in the end of regulation the battering and intimidation paid off - in field goal range, Farve threw a pic that let the game go into overtime.

Do you really believe that the "bounties" made any difference on how the D would have gone after Favre?

I dislike Favre intensely. But to his credit even he said shortly after this "bounty" stuff made headlines, 'Now the truth comes out. That'€™s good. But that'€™s football. The only thing that really pisses me off about the whole thing is we lost the game. That'€™s the thing about that day that still bothers me. And that'€™s the way it goes. If they wanted me to testify in court about this, they'€™d be calling the wrong guy.'

I hope he loses the appeal. But since he doesn't have anything else to do, why not? I also like the idea of the frustration of going through the process and then losing.

This crap goes in every level of sports, from little league up, to penalize him for something everyone does is hypocritical at best.

Why not, sports are only encourage to keep the useful idiots entertained to keep them from noticing how worthless their lives are and doing something about it. To pretend it is something else is moronic at best.

Physicality is built into football. Players are coached to make the other player "pay" for it at all levels.

However, my Saints institutionalized an illegal reward system that is specifically forbidden and then lied about it. Had they stopped "bounty" pool when the NFL had first investigated them over a year ago, this all would have been swept under the rug. It was the lying that caused the severity of the punishment. I just think the punishment is too severe.

He is just about as bad as Gregg Williams for not catching this sooner. And it's unfortunate, to me, he seemed like an on the ball kinda guy. I guess that tells me that we don't know people as well as we think we do

Competition is one thing but head hunting should be criminal. Payton is a sociopath and he does not understand the beauty of sport. The last thing a real coach wants, is his competition to be weaken by design. In my career as a coach, I loved nothing more, win or lose, than to watch my players, and myself, drive ourselves beyond our own expectations due to fiercely competitive opponent. Peyton, and all the others like him, need psychological help and some spiritual renewal.
