Should Rondo Have Been Suspended?

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is ultra-talented and one of the the top players in his position. His on-court swagger and triple-double threats are serious business for his opponents. But as we've covered here on SodaHead Sports before, Rondo can also be a bit of a basket case. And when he is, bad things happens -- and that's usually bad for the Celtics.

Rondo was already suspended earlier this year for getting into it with an NBA official and now he'll find himself missing an all-too-important Game 2 first round playoff game against the Atlanta Hawks. In the Game 1 loss, Rondo chest bumped a referee and clearly looked like he was trying to intimidate him with his physical presence and perhaps, even verbal abuse.

Rule No. 1, pro-ballers: Don't get into it with officials whether you're right or wrong. Rule No. 2: Don't make physical contact with an official. And Rule No. 3: Just don't be a jerk. Rondo failed at abiding by these three simple rules. It may be playoff basketball, but it isn't life and death. However, the Celtics' slim championship hopes may further inch towards a bad death if Game 2 results in a loss. It may be a team game, but Celtics fans -- and the team itself -- should be frustrated that their best player, Rajon Rondo, won't be on the court.

It was accidental contact. But, to be fair, I must admit that I am cheering for the Celtics, so, I am a bit biased on this one. LOL

Absolutely! You never, ever bump an official. That's rule number one. It's been said he was a handful, I guess that's coming out now. Dumb move on Rondo's part.

He admitted the first t was earned, and whether he tripped or not he should have backed off. You bump the ref after a technical and you're out. No need to study the replay. The only possible exception would be if he were pushed into the ref. Doc Rivers defense of his player was required but completely inaccurate.

For his attitude yes. Altho he did trip and that's not something he meant to do. I saw the clip you can clearly see his foot clipped the refs foot and caused a jerk like a trip would cause thus creating the bump into the ref. It's not hard to miss.

I admire a player's passion but like everyone else he needs to abide by the rules and the boundaries and he hasn't done that-so there should be consequences. Simple, not rocket science.

There are so many talented players that are role models and good sports. We need to start weeding out these hotheads before the NBA morphs into MMA.

Some people just react out of impulse without ever thinking twice, like when Amare Stoudamire punched in encased fire extinguisher case, resulting in gashing his hand, receiving stitches, and most likely will not be available for Game 3 against the Heat in New York. Ridiculous.

case gashing hand receiving stitches game 3 heat york ridiculous

yes all of these over paid over ego inflated people who can't maintain self control and keep the sportsmenship in sports should be suspended for a whole bunch of games.

if they lose enough money = playing time perhapes they will get the message that this is a game and keep it in real world context

.....and I'm a MAJOR Celtics fan.

Trip, stumbled, or whatever people call it he enjoyed shoving his shoulder into the referee (who makes very bad calls, in my opinion). There should be some sort of punishment. Perhaps 1 game...maybe 2.

I don't know how Obama got into the conversation . However since he does not have a hsitory of attacking refs , why shouldn't I give him the benefit of the doubt ? It is clear that he did trip.

the king of blame .. that is how he got here ..

do not make contact with ref.. there is no little *** in the rule book ..

no contact or no play.. kinda simple... keep the execuses to your self, no contact .

After watching it a lot of times I definitely think he should get a ONE game suspension. That being said what he did was not THAT egregious, he did trip and he could have caught himself but instead he just bumped him a little bit. Deserves a suspension, doesn't deserve all the attention it gets. When you're in the heat of a game things happen, but Rondo shouldn't have gotten upset about the call, shouldn't have even gotten the first tech and definitely should have been cool enough to walk away.

More and more players are seemingly experiencing a condition called "temporary insanity". Rules are in place for a reason and must be abided by all involved, no exceptions.

If you watch the replay of what happened, he tripped on someones foot and bumped into the ref. It was not intentional to touch the ref. What a sham!

No question. It's unfortunate for the Celtics because he's such an integral part of their offense.
