Should Robert Griffin III Be Redskins' Starter?

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III was selected number two overall in this year's NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. As for being second string on the Redskins? That's not happening, according to Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, who told the media over the weekend that he expects Griffin aka RG3 to be the team's starting quarterback. Training camp hasn't even begun yet and RG3 is already being thrown to the NFL wolves.

However, that may work to the rookie's benefit in the long run. He can prepare to be a starter as opposed to a guy watching on the bench, and he knows what he's in for. At least until he gets hit by an NFL-level defensive player. Still, it's puzzling there wasn't at least a quarterback competition between Griffin and a veteran, just to give him more motivation. Then again, the millions in Griffin's bank account should be motivating enough.

For years, Redskins fans have struggled watching their team go from coach to coach and quarterback to quarterback. There were some signs of progress with former quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Mark Brunell, but those were brief and didn't last very long. And while many fans may wonder why Griffin is announced as the starter so soon, they may also remember the infamously unspectacular Rex Grossman starting the last two seasons.

That'll cause them to wonder no longer. Can Griffin have immediate success like Cam Netwon, Matt Ryan, and Joe Flacco in their rookie seasons? He'll have his hands full in the NFC East—home of defending Super Bowl champs the New York Giants.

Having been a Baylor fan and seeing him at the games...he works hard, learns quickly and can adapt...
But i really dont understand the Redskins...why was their 2nd pick also a QB?

As long as the line Gives RG3 some protection he'll be good...
But you know every pass rusher in the league will be gunning to tackle the fastest QB in football..

You don't draft somebody #2 overall and not make them the starter.
  • Arel 2012/05/10 00:17:54
    Now they need a receiver.

Considering their choices....but then the fans here think they are going to the Superbowl if they win a preseason game

I hope this time,s the charm. The skins are my favorite team but have struggled badly since winning the Super Bowl in 1992.

    He will be a bust
  • george 2012/05/08 12:34:35
He better be! The skins need a quarterback and they are not going to sit their 1st round draft pick. He deserves some time to learn the NFL system but he better put his running shoes on because they will be coming after the rookie. NYG Fan

One chance at the slot...he ain't gonna muck around.
  • Callaway 2012/05/08 11:16:19
Considering what they gave up for him and the product they fielded last year sure why not. If Shanahan thinks he's ready he would most likely have the best view of how good he is and how fast he will progress. They won't throw the whole book at him and adapt at what he can best excel in. I do love how Sam Bradford is continually forgotten on how good he did in his rookie year on a really bad Rams team when rookie records at brought up of course this will be a free pass for Luck with the Colts.

Have you met the Redskins...you know the team without a quarterback for the last 40 years
  • Steven 2012/05/08 02:48:05
Things are different than they were years ago. Quarterbacks now a days can come right in there and start. Look at Ryan in Atlanta. Besides he is already better than Grossman and minicamp hasn't even started yet.

If this kid is as rare as they come, that's all the more reason not to rush him in and possibly ruining his psyche as well as his career. Vince Young was ruined by misdirection over at Tennessee and he had excellent potential. I hope Colt McCoy over at Cleveland doesn't get done like that.

If the Head Coach thinks he should! That the Fans think he should is just armchair talk.

He seems talented and mature enough. But it's the Head Coaches call! That's why he has the job and not you! No offense!
  • MrFabulous47 2012/05/08 00:48:44
100% yes. They have had trash at quarterback for years. I just hope Shanahan doesn't screw this kid up because he's something special.

He better be the starter for as much as the Redskins gave up to draft him. I think the Redskins made the dumbest trade in the history of the NFL. They gave up 3 first round picks a second round pick and this years pick to the rams in return for the number 2 overall this year. That means they gave up 3 top 5 or 10 picks for the next 3 years and a high 2nd round pick to move up 4 spots in the draft for a QB that has never taken an NFL snap. Ridiculous!!!!! If they dont start RG3 then the Redskins are hands down the dumbest franchise in sports
  • Alencon 2012/05/07 16:12:09
Duh, yeah, why do you think they drafted him? Seriously, the Redskins need to shake things up and I'm a Giants fan. I thought it was funny that the Cowboys announcecd they intend to put pressure on Griffin. Ya think? I wonder why the Eagles and Giants didn't think of that (*cough, cough*).
