Should Rajon Rondo Be Suspended?

Boston Celtics guard and All-Star player Rajon Rondo was supposed to take that next step in his basketball career. His general manager Danny Ainge and head coach Doc Rivers both went out of their way to call these Celtics Rondo's team. Unfortunately, Rondo showed anything but leadership this past Sunday in a loss to the lowly Detroit Pistons.

Rondo let his temper get the best of him and threw a basketball at an NBA referee on court. The NBA decided to punish Rondo and has handed him a two-game suspension. Coach Rivers expressed disappointment when talking to the media about his young star, who is also one of the top point guards in the league.

After looking like they were getting back into the swing of things, the Celtics have now lost five of six games. The Celtics got old and got old fast with the Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce -- each most likely being a future Basketball Hall of Famer. Rondo may have the ability to lead his team to the playoffs and carry them farther than people think, but at the end of the day, players must respect their officials -- and keep their emotions in check.

You've got to keep your cool. And you have to respect the officials.

Reminds me of when Ainge threw a ball at Sam Cassell and hit him square in the face.

I loves me some Rajon Rondo, because he played for the University of Kentucky. [This tigger bleeds blue. Go Cats!] Unfortunately, I hate the Celtics. But I digress... Rondo may be considered a young NBA player, especially when compared to his somewhat elderly teammates, but he's been around long enough to know that you DO NOT throw a ball at an official. Actually, I'm surprised the league only gave him a two-game suspension for basically attacking a referee. The Boston Celtics really do need to think about recruiting some younger players, because Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are starting to show their age. Rajon Rondo has stepped into a leadership role on the team, and he is setting a terrible example by lobbing basketballs at NBA officials when he gets pissed off. Bad form indeed.

As long as professional athletes are treated different than any Tom, Dick and Harry on the streets, there will continue to be things like this and much worse.

When someone lets their emotions get in the way of things or throws a ball the wrong way or something, check them for fibromyalgia, a cold, rapid heart beat, high blood pressure, Asperger's Syndrome, acne breakouts and joint, bone or tendon problems.

He should definitely be suspended, theres no doubt.

But I disagree with the notion that officials need to be respected. A lot of officials do deserve respect. They do a good job, a tough job and only occasionally make mistakes but they show a level of respect to the players.

There are officials though that are pieces of trash - they attempt to make the game about them, blatantly make bad calls or consistently make bad calls, and there are officials who attempt to provoke conflict with players.

So blanket respect for officials? I think not.

You must lead by example, a lot of people are watching the games. Act your age and not your shoe size, or stay the hell of the court.

If the ref thought Rondo was disrespectful, okay, but I saw the clip, and it did not appear too egregious, it might have been bad timing. But these guys are pros, they make a lot of money entertaining, and they should understand that.

Why is this even being asked? Of course he should be suspended and he should also be fined. Referees, especially in professional sports, are off limits - period.

I don't watch or follow any basketball since the Iverson chapter started, a big part of this sport is a bunch of thugs now, I was perfectly content with them on lockout. I even started a Lockout Foundation.....

You're quite welcome Meako. Its almost as if he caught the referee off-guard when he threw it at him right? It wasn't a blatant foul, it was a borderline foul at best in my opinion?
