    I think...

This is a bit of a tough one for me. Especially given the fact that people actually going to the movies pays my bills. I guess it depends on the extent of whats being done. How big the operation is. Low level people just buying and selling a few here and there, NO they should not get jail time. Most of the time this kind of thing starts from the inside when screeners go out. Especially at awards time, this is big. Someone gets a screener, loans it to a friend, that friend loans it to another friend and so on. Hard to stop unless you stop with the screeners from the inside. People that get caught bringing video cameras into the movie theater should get busted for sure. Give 'em a hefty fine.

    No, because

...my tax dollars could be put to better use than this. Like staying in my pocket.

You can say that again, brother. Even the covers on those bootleg movie wouldn't make good toilet tissue. It's just one big ugly knock-off/rip-off!!!

A friend of my wife gave her a bootleg of Transformers, shot with a handheld camera in a theater. For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would pay for that. About a third of the screen was missing and the picture was bad, to the point where we couldn't tell what was going on during the action scenes. On the plus side, the added commentary from the audience was pretty funny and the guy with the afro walking by every ten minutes was actually pretty entertaining (did that guy even watch the movie?), but I really don't get why anyone would pay for that. If I spent five bucks on that, I'd be pissed. Like I said, the woman gave it to my wife for free, but it didn't seem worth it even for that much.

Yeah the cam videos are horrible. The people in the audience are probably more entertaining than the actual vid (like you said). Going to see the movie (especially a matinee) is not much more. Such a waste of money.

I know I'd rather spend my bucks on a trip to the theater or an actual DVD than the garbage we watched.

Great points, Katy! Some of those video cam people make big bucks from this bootlegging crap. At first it seemed like a victim-less crime to me, but when I really think about it its very wrong. It takes a lot of people to get a film green lit and even more people to make the actual film (when I watch the ending credits on some movies, there are literally hundreds of names involved). It probably cost the Hollywood industry a lot of money in loss profits preventing the honest 'Best Grip', 'Make-Up artist', or construction guy from getting paid their real worth. Bootlegging is definitely wrong.

    No, because

our jails are already filled up enough. Why not just charge them a hefty fine?
