Should New Jersey Fly Flags at Half-Staff for Whitney Houston?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie scored brownie points when he publicly sided against "Jersey Shore," but his decision to pay respects to Whitney Houston isn't going so well. He has reportedly announced that flags at the government building will fly at half mast on Saturday during Houston's funeral in Newark, the hometown of the late recording artist. Critics are claiming she "forfeited the good things that she did" when her problems with substance abuse got out of control.

Bill O'Reilly agrees with Christie's decision. He explained on the "Today" show, "I think we should respect the life and talent of Whitney Houston. I said a prayer when I heard she died. This isn't a personal thing. This is a preventive thing. I want society and media to tell the truth about drug and alcohol addiction. Let's stop exploiting it and start explaining it." Christie, for his part, said, "What I would say to everybody is there but for the grace of God go I." Do you think Chris Christie's decision to raise the flags half-mast for Whitney is a good one?

When soldiers die, the flags are not flown at half mast.

Whitney Houston dies, and suddenly that's cause for it? Plenty of iconic singers (among other celebs) have died with no such recognition. What makes her more important than them and the soldiers dying to ensure she had the right to live as she wished?

No she's not worthy of that honor. Not by the way she lived her life.

Governor Christie should never have done this. It elevates Houston to the status of fallen heroes and leads our youth to believe that drugs are acceptable. She was a drug addict, plain and simple. And while it is sad she died, she should not be treated as more than other drug addicts.

Suck up to the blacks, so would that be your reason for saying no because of being black. Are there not blacks in your . Are there not black successful blacks, Her state gave her the honors not the whole USA. And you say you have brain cells, do you even have a brain. So Elvis Presley if Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee where ever he came from had flown their flag, would that had been ok, cause he was white. Well obiviously his state didnt care that much. Maybe your state will hangem high high when you go, or maybe they will see how long can they go, can they go go down low, drop it like it's heart Boo Boo.

Although the rules for flags at half-mast allow for this occurrence, it should not have occurred, because it diminishes what half-mast means.

I also think that flying at half-mast for politicians is just "WRONG", and the reasons for this are self-evident!

Half flag should be for soldiers who give their lives for their country, or very top Government Officials, not CELEBRITIES! Where would this go, if now every celebrity's relatives demand half flag, just because this guy did it for this celebrity? Absurd!

Amazing talent, yes, and her rendition of our national anthem was incredible, but this does not rise to the level of our nation's or any state's top honor - which is traditionally reserved for those who devoted, risked, or, gave - their lives - to our country.

I thought it was odd that Christie did this and odder still that O'Reilly supported his decision. She had the most amazing voice but her contribution to America was questionable. I think she should have been quietly laid to rest rather than glorify the bad choices she made.
Someone commented that she had great wealth. Actually at the time of her death she owed a lot of money to her drug dealer and her home was being foreclosed.

No-the state should not cram celebrity worship down the throats of the slaves. They are already oppressed bad enough by the banks that operate through the state. Houston had an opulent lifestyle and enjoyed immense wealth and power, she was more than compensated for her gifts so she was plenty recognized.

NO..., they should not have done that.. even though i liked Whitney's gift..i had to disagree with this flag thing. But i did state quite a few times this week, while many were upset overall..the very same statement he did..."there but for the grace of God, go I "...she did pick the wrong roads...but i have to hold fast to that statement...so sad..

Yes, It's a sign of respect. When I was in high school when our town lost a student in an accident, flags were lowered. It is a sign of grief and mourning, and a symbol that someone is missing, in her hometown, such a thing would be absolutely appropriate. The idea that flags aren't flown when a state loses a solider should fall directly upon the Mayor, it should be brought to the attention of the state, and flags should be lowered, not doing so shows disrespect upon the mayor of that state.

We are all just one person making up billions of people on this planet - it's unfair to say that one particular person is superior to others just because of something that made her famous. I do things everyday but I never feature in the news as I'm not a celebrity.

I hardly think dieing from alcohol and drugs warrants flying a flag at half mass, whether shes white or black what does that have to do with the question???

No more than Elvis. What did he die from. Elvis, was at best, a culture bandit. But he is considered the King of Rock and Roll. And he was an addict. Huh! Ya'll worship him as a god. Eric Clapton - God when he was a druggie. He isn't now, but when he was worshiped as God, he was an addict.

Nobody cares about race, only people that like to use it as an excuse for their own failures or those who like to get mileage by playing the victim 24/7. And they'll never give it up either because the perks of living that lie outweigh the benefits of living in reality. People like Undercover love to perpetuate racism while decrying victimization of racism-they are the ultimate hypocrites and make me SICK.

I don't see where anyone was crying victimization when dealing with Whitney. So, if you're sick, it's because you're making yourself sick! But I expect to see and hear your outrage every time a program done on Hitler or someone like that. I expect to see your writings expressing outrage at the programs broadcasting and your determination that a show about him is a waste of airspace., etc.
