Should NBC Cancel 'Stars Earn Stripes'?

NBC's new reality show "Stars Earn Stripes" is not a hit with Nobel Peace laureates. Nine prize-winners have asked the network to cancel the show, calling it an effort to "sanitize war by likening it to an athletic competition," Reuters reports.

stars earn stripes

In an open letter to NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt, the laureates said that "preparing for war is neither amusing nor entertaining." The letter continues "It is our belief that this program pays homage to no one anywhere and continues and expands on an inglorious tradition of glorifying war and armed violence. Real war is down in the dirt deadly. People -- military and civilians -- die in ways that are anything but entertaining..."

But NBC is standing behind its show, which is hosted by retired U.S. General Wesley Clark and features "stars" like Nick Lachey and Todd Palin participating in military-style training. "'Stars Earn Stripes' is about thanking the young Americans who are in harm's way every day. This show is not a glorification of war but a glorification of service," the network said in a statement. Do you think the show should be canceled?

I noticed that most the criticism comes from NON-veterans. I liked it, I love that they are raising money and awareness of these charities. People are not ignorant, they know it's not reality. The stars are constantly recognizing the sacrifice of the soldiers. Get over it! Plus, who are you to tell those former soldiers doing the show that they are wrong. They served and good for them making money. Shut up if you haven't served...if a family member has served...YEAH, NOT THE SAME. You were not in the service, you have no clue! I am sorry, it's the truth, you have NO IDEA! If it gets some smart educated young people "juiced" to join the military, I for one am for it...not like the felons they have been taking to fill their ranks.

Seriously. My nephew is in the army, just got back from Afghanistan, I was soooo worried while he was over there. I think Obama has broken nearly every promise he's made.

Wish you had maybe. I haven't seen it yet. It's on the DVR. Ask me next week sometime. I'll probably like it for 1 season, and then get sick of the format, like all the rest of these reality shows. We really DO need to hire writers to write TV again.

They give Nobel prizes like groupons these days.

No hate, don't blow it all out of proportion, it's just one persons opinion. Paint an American warrior in anything but a white light and people jump right up your ass about it. People are fools.

"many hate" I said nothing about one person's opinion. White light? A deliberate lie is far from not in a white light. Yes, some are as you have shown.

I never saw any bragging, but if they did, who are you to judge, you weren't there getting shot at. Those guys were trained to kill, not win their hearts and minds.

I know this, a soldiers place is on the battlefield not television. I can see it now....warriors killing for stardom and a tv paycheck, just what we need..........you must know an arborist/tree climber, that is my profession.

why not brag. I'm sure everyone those guys killed had it coming and would have killed you and I if given a chance. Terrorists are nothing but dogs needing to be put down. Our soldiers do our killing for us for less than minimum wage, so if they can make a few bucks when they get home, I can't hold it against them.

I"m just going by what my military friends and family tell me. Considering the number of hours they work, it averages minimum wage. I'm not pro war at all, but I do support our soldiers and I'm not some bleeding heart pussy.

That's what they signed up for, as soon as your name is on that dotted line you are officially "government property". Anyone who complains about pay is a whore not a soldier. Are they fighting for freedom or money?

I like sort of like it, leave it on the air. So what of nine Nobel Peace Laureates disapprove, on what grounds? There military experience? I think not, did they even see the show? It’s just a reality show with ex-military personnel who have experience in black ops.

First, this is not a peaceful world and probably never will be. Second, kinda reminds me of boot camp, and for those of you who never went to boot camp you don't have a clue how hard it is. I've crawled under barbed wire with a 50 caliber being shot over my head and mortars hitting a few feet away before, aww what a rush......

I watched it the other night and liked it . Yeah when it came on I kind of scoffed , but the stars were paired with a military man/woman and given a mission to accomplish . The military coaches the stars and the stars were quick to acknowledge the amount of training these military people undergo. In my opinion , it in no way demeans these great men and women

I'm pretty anti-reality tv as a whole, but I vote keep it on the air just to annoy these Nobel people. They're a bunch of hacks. The Nobel Peace prize lost all it's legitamacy when it gave prizes to Carter, Algore, and the Bamster. It's just meant to be a liberal resumé enhancer.

Yea, I forgot Clark Gable and Eddie Albert (Green Acres TV sictom in the 60's.)
Gable flew in Europe on a bomber crew, Albert was a landing craft operator at Tarawa.
Gables tragedy in the war was his wife was killed in an air crash while she was on a war bonds sale tour. Carol Lombard I believe.
Some who became stars after the war were Tony Curtis, who served in the navy and Charlton Hesston who was a rifleman in Europe.
And either the guy who played Mat Dillon on TV or his borther Peter Graves. One of them was in the infantry I think in Italy.
The guy who played the side kick in a lot of Burt Reynolds movies landed in Normandy on D-day. Can't remember his name either.
Also a guy from Lakeland Florida. Lee Marivn. He was wounded on Saipan I think.
And of course foremost, medal of honor winner Audie Murphy. Murphy didn't make more than a couple of movies though after the war.
The guy who played with Burt Lancaster in Byrd Man of Alcatraz. I want to say Nevil Brand but I'm not sure. He was a good character actor in a lot of movies. I think that guy was another medal of honor winner.
Combat makes you a better competitor I think. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

We had our heroes. A guy who graduated from highschool with my PE coach, Tommy McGuire as in McGuire Air Force base. McGuire was the second ranking U.S. air ace with 38 confirmed kills in the Pacific. McGurie died when he stalled his P38 over the Phillines. He had tried to turn too quick to go to the aid of a wingman who was in trouble.
    We had our heroes.

After doing some research on this show I now realize that it's mostly military personnel who are trash talking it, so I'll stand with the military and vote yes to cancel it.
I read where one service man said that the time would be better spent on highlighting the lives of our fallen soldiers...sounds like a good idea to me.

Their opinion (Nobel Peace laureates) counts more because?
Maybe "Fox" could get Gordon Ramsay to teach them (the stars) how to cook?
That shouldn't get anyone to worked up. Unless they tried to feed some troops...
