Should 'Modern Family' Show Gay Couple Kissing?

For "Modern Family" co-creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, social politics are just another aspect of producing a television show that claims to typify the modern American family.

One problem they've run into revolves around the characters Cameron and Mitchell, a suburban gay couple who have adopted a Vietnamese daughter. Fans and observers have been wondering why Cam and Mitchell have yet to share an on-screen kiss.

There's even a Facebook group called "Let Cam and Mitchell Kiss on 'Modern Family'" with over 13,000 members.

But have no fear, Facebook protesters. Levitan has officially announced that the next season of "Modern Family" would feature the two kissing. He told E! Online, "We've had an episode planned for a long time that dealt with that subject."

However, Levitan wasn't exactly happy about the criticism. He wonders why straight couples who are never shown kissing, like Jay and Gloria from the same show, don't get the same question.

"It almost bothers us that there was a little bit of controversy about it," Levitan explain to E!. "We don't want to appear that we're answering that criticism. But sure enough, we're dealing with public displays of affection, and the power of a kiss."

They're a couple in love who have adopted a child together. Of course they should share a kiss. Love has no gender.

Plus, I adore Cam and Mitchell. They're my favorite from the show. Well, and I love Phil too. Haha.

-also the other couples do kiss. They may not be long heated kisses but they do show their affection through kissing whether it be a peck or an "I love you" kiss."

I don't personally think it's necessary for them to kiss, and I don't think it's necessary for straight couples on TV to kiss either. But I suppose that if they really want to, they can go ahead...

While I believe in Gay rights (I believe in equal rights for everyone, so...) and am behind any quest for equality anyone might have, the main reason I'm for it has nothing to do equality (Well, indirectly it does, but...). The main reason I think they should is that its gonna happen sooner or later. It is destined to happen one way or another eventually, so just get it over with. Twenty years ago, you couldn't swear on TV, now you can to an extent. Back in the "I Love Lucy" days, they couldn't show a marital bed on TV; they had to be twins (And they couldn't even SAY the word "Pregnant"...) and now they can show people writhing in copulative bliss. And, just a little while ago, Lesbians were in the same boat as gay men, no kissing, but, as far as I can remember, I've seen two women passionately kissing more than once in the past few years, so is it just Men people are concerned about...? I mean, I can't say seeing those two guys kissing is an appealing thought, but thats just a matter or taste and my opinion. Its the love they are meant to be conveying thats the important part. And lastly, for anyone that would be overly uncomfortable and/or are against seeing these two men kiss, just watch the scene from "Borat" where the 400 pound guy "wrestles" with Borat. Everything else in the world seems mild and PG compared to that, yikes...

I've never watched the show, but they are a couple and it seems that they have even adopted a baby. Why haven't they kissed already? It shouldn't be a big deal. So shut up and kiss!

Why not - straight people kiss on TV all the time and homophobes declare we aren't second class citizens... inferring equality - so why not... they should kiss or NO ONE kisses.

I don't see why it's such a big deal. Over here we have a gay couple on TV and one of them is a Muslim and they kiss/cuddle all the time.

I don't care what they do. I'm surprised they haven't kissed yet or had sex. I have never enjoyed Hollyweirds indoctrinating of what a american family is. They wouldn't know what a real family was if they saw one. I for one will never watch this show and that is my right. I refuse to allow certain diverse lifestyles into my home. So what you watch is your business, enjoy.

I don't think its Hollywood thats restricting content. Its really the FCC under pressure from "Family Values" groups and the religious right that cause all the problems. But, like I said, once the issue has been beaten into the ground and everyone has gone onto the next big "scandal", it'll eventually happen. Aside from a giant EM pulse over North America (England already has gay kissing on TV...) that knocks TV off the air, nothing can stop it at this point.

Gay kissing on TV in the UK? I've seen genitals and buttocks. UK TV has it all! Absolutely brilliant!

I kind of agree with the family values groups. I don't want children seeing crap on TV. Thats why I will never watch this program. I know its up to parents to tell there children what to watch but we also know some parents aren't paying attention to what their kids are watching but thats another subject.

Why would a couple not kiss?

Let have a couple kiss marathon, and see how many couples they can display kissing.

I think we need more shows where affection is being shown. I look at TV shows lately and its all about gangsters, hate, corruption, dysfunctional families, drama, and lament. I'm not saying we should always portrait things through a pink glass. Some times we have to be realistic life is hard and nobody say it was going to get easier. But at least we have the power to maneuver how we want to feel towards it.

Well, I know at least ONE of them is gay. They probably both are, so... But, either way, if I was getting paid that much money per episode, My Husband could spank me naked with an over sized Catfish on Sunday morning TV, for all I care... or maybe a Flounder...

and why not? I've watched the show and it's harmless, might boost there ratings and isn't that what TV is all about...It's been done before so I doubt many will care or watch, just don't pull the gay card...Just leave it as a kiss and move on..

Its a slice of life comedy. What do you mean, you don't see a reason...? Really, there's no reason for almost all TV to be shown. But its great that it there. I mean, aside from the usual 100 or so things you could otherwise be doing, what else is there...? I mean, there's only so long I can talk to my cat before we get into an argument over international politics, so...

If the actors are comfortable doing so, then they should kiss on screen as much as any other tv couple, as should Jay and Gloria.

No we are in enough trouble with our country & those of us that have religious upbring-ings already fear the way our country is flaunting all of our ungodly habits we need to get back to helping those in need NOT flaunt diverse life style's, I enjoy watching MODERN FAMILY but will turn to another program if more attention is given to gay couple we all know there are gay people But do not throw in our face. Right now it is a fairly good comedy DO NOT MAKE IT POLITICAL. T.V. is for entertainment.

You know... I'm over the marginalization of american gay couples. Why is this even a topic of discussion. Of course they should kiss, like all tv couples kiss but why is it such a big deal?! It's 2010 and everything that gays are going through and have been through has been downsized to a friggin' television kiss? I get so disgusted sometimes here... seriously.
