Should Lady Gaga Drop the Ball at Times Square This Year? (Because She Is)

New Year's is just days away, and New York City is eagerly preparing for its big Times Square countdown where nearly a million onlookers watch the 12-foot, 11,875-pound geodesic ball drop from One Times Square. The ball has changed over the years since its 1907 initiation, but for the most part the celebration has remained pretty predictable. But there's one element that changes every year: Who's gonna drop the ball?

The New York Post announced that Mayor Bloomberg picked Lady Gaga for this year's ceremony. She will press the Waterford Crystal button on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" at exactly 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve, formally initiating the one-minute drop into 2012. In the past, that position has been filled by influential figures like Muhammad Ali and Bill Clinton. Was it a good choice to pick Lady Gaga?

I think that they should have the Navy Seals or a soldier who has just returned home drop the ball. That is something that all American's can appreciate.

Well, it is out of our hands anyway, so if for no other reason that to see what sort of crazy outfit she will have on. Does anybody wonder what happens to all those crazy things she wears....do they go to the Goodwill, or garage sale, or a warehouse someplace????

How about we get some of our brave men and women who fight for our freedom, together, to do the ball drop? THAT would be something to celebrate. GaGa just needs to go away.

"just as long as that 11,875-pound, 12-foot, geodesic ball dropped right on top of her head. Now THAT would be worth celebrating! WOO-HOO!"

Wow, that's very human and Christian of you. Nice to see someone with such a loving heart and soul.

Actually, my comments were meant to be (sort of) facetious as well. And I never said whether or not I was a Christian, and sometimes I feel like I'm only half-human, so there you have it. Anyhoo... May you and yours have a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

I've had my fill of Gaga by now. Yes, she has a talented voice and has produced some respectable pop hits. But to me, she's not as talented a singer as Madonna. Gaga's whole attitude was inspired by Madonna, and she has basically tried to make herself even more of a pop icon. It's all so contrived. She got so lucky to channel through the right people (she was certainly persistent), and her taste in style is so outlandish, it's comical... and appealing to the young female crowd. Somebody in her circle really knows their stuff, who to connect with, how to position the whole thing. She's really more of a comedienne to me than anything else... and a very overpaid one at that. At least she does send some positive messages to the younger crowd. "Be yourself and don't let anybody stop you." But, should she drop the ball? No, I don't think we need another Gaga Extravaganza. I agree with Jill, that it should be a soldier who came home from Iraq/Afghanistan. DEFINITELY. Let's get back to reality.

I personally love Lady Gaga. I think she's inspiring and an amazing artist. She's shown everyone that it only takes a little bit of courage to be yourself and not change to be the person everyone else wants you to be.

How can you say she is "herself". All she does is try to be as different as possible to draw negative attention to herself. If she was talented she would be surviving on that alone....anyone who has to change herself as much as she does is showing that she does not have talent.

ENOUGH.........already.. shove this woman DOWN OUR THROATS VISUALLY and AUDIBLY..now socially shove her so deep, we are ingrained with her IDEALS of AMERICANA in every aspect of our culture ..SHE IS NOT A GOD and certainly far from what one should consider a ROLE MODEL..stop with the IDOLIZING THIS CRAZY ARTIST...she is just a human..nothing more..her words aren't GOLD or BRING THE DEAD BACK TO LIFE..she is an artist ..period..

idolize someone who MATTERED and SACRIFICED for you and your life...maybe that is where we should start....we live in such a shallow and vapid society of late...

yes she does this AMERICA..she can be anything she wants..POPULAR is a choice...

but the question AX'D...MY OPINION, as she is allowed to drop the ball in times square..I AM ALLOWED TO SPEAK MY PIECE..she does all the time...WE LIVE IN AMERICA>>don't we...
but in a time of REAL TROUBLE in our society this gathering in times square is MOOT..soon that gathering will be OUTLAWED..the right to gather two or more in a public place for PROTEST or SPEAKING ONES MIND..which is actually what is taking place RIGHT..SPEAKING A GOOD WILL TO THE NEW YEAR....our country is screwed when the vapid and the crazies and the famous are our ROLE MODELS and they can VOICE their INSANITY in our society....she did Thanksgiving and Christmas GAGA STYLE and NOW THE NEW YEAR...yippee..

Though she may not have many supporters on these forums, Lady Gaga is hugely popular. This ball thing is hardly a solemn occasion. The event is marketing. So Lady Gaga is ideal.

I could never understand the hype over new years. Just like the other 364 (+ 1 every 4 years) days January 1st will arrive every year until the end of time. This date for the start of the new year is rather arbitrary. See Wikipedia. Realistically a new year just means a date change and for those on a calendar year a restart of financial records. Nothing of substance changes between Dec. 31st and Jan.1st. I live about 10 miles from Times Square. You could never have dragged me there on new year's eve. Don't watch the drop on tv either. Commerce season doesn't interest me.

Lady who? Who gives a damn what lady gaga does? She is so inconsequential she almost doesn't exist. I agree with some of the other comments, have a soldier drop the ball. He deserves to express his patriotism and love of country. Lady gaga is pure bait for stupid people. Is it true that she had some sort of horns implanted in her forehead? Just saying. Is this another case of "can't see the forest for the trees?"

Don't know if that is really no makeup.

    lady Gaga

Lady Gaga looks good. Go to a busy mall though and in 10 minutes you'll see many women prettier. And no looks aren't everything. Except in extreme cases (both sexes) they matter very little once an interaction between people begins.

Pushing the button is one of the last acts of 2011 so Gaga is a great choice to close out the old year. Question is will she advance into 2012.I hope so.

I just cant get into someone that needs so much facade to come out in public. I really don't want anything like that to introduce 2012 for me.
