According to Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and ESPN, future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, 36, is considering retirement, following the team's elimination from the Eastern Conference Finals this postseason. Garnett needs time to think, but time may not be on the side of the Celtics, who have to worry about the draft and free agency coming up.
If the Celtics retain Garnett, that straps them right there at about $21 million, but Ainge told Boston sports radio station WEEI-93.7 FM that he doesn't expect the franchise to let go of any of their free agents. Of course, those free agents can go where they please, but if they want to stay in Boston, the Celtics seem keen on making that happen. Celtics players Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, and one-third of the Big Three Ray Allen are free agents this summer.
Garnett is highly regarded as one of the best NBA big men of all-time. His fierce determination and ability to maximize his athletic gifts helped keep the Minnesota Timberwolves relevant as long as he could, in spite of the franchise's poor decisions. When he was traded to the Boston Celtics, along with Ray Allen, he helped breathe new life to a once-promising franchise. Plus, in the first year of the Big Three experiment -- Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce -- they won the NBA Championship. Do you think Kevin Garnett will retire?

That said, with the changes in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NBA, teams can't be saddled with enormous superstar salaries and still be able to field a full, well rounded team.
