Should 'Harry Potter' Have Been Nominated for Best Picture?

When we polled SodaHeads on the Academy Awards' Best Picture category, there were quite a few people rooting for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," even though it wasn't nominated. It was nominated for some technical categories, but nothing big. We're talking "Harry Potter" here, not "Twilight." "Lord of the Rings" actually won Best Picture in 2003; doesn't "Potter" deserve a chance? Well, Daniel Radcliffe would have to agree, and he's totally "miffed" that it didn't get one. (British people, right?)

The "Harry Potter" star told Radio Times, "I don't think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids' films, unless they're directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching 'Hugo' the other day and going, 'Why is this nominated and we're not?' I was slightly miffed. There's a certain amount of snobbery. It's kind of disheartening. I never thought I'd care. But it would've been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in." Do you agree with Daniel Radcliffe? Does "Harry Potter" deserve a "Best Picture" nomination?

No.Daniel Radcliffe didn't say they were snubbed. He has said that he didn't think they were snubbed. It's been misquoted.

my own opinion. They screwed up the last films so badly. If you mess up the stories then no, shouldn't be nominated. I feel that the films should be given some form of 'Special Contribution Award' or some such thing, and I think Alan Rickman deserves a nod for 'best Supporting Actor'... but other than that no. The film was not one of the best of the year, and they've made really poor adaptation.

Neither more, nor Mr. Radcliffe believe it's been snubbed.

The Deathly Hallows Part 1 maybe, but Part 2 was lame. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should've been nominated, but instead we got "Extremely Lame and Incredibly Corny".

Sorry, I just don't think it was Oscar material. I do agree there appears to be an inherent bias toward the touchy-feely, and that may be working against Potter. but even that aside, I don't think it deserves to stand immortalized alongside Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mocking Bird or even Lord of the Kings.

I will go along with a nod to Rickman as best supporting actor, however. He at least deserves consideration.

"Best Picture" noms aren't bones to be thrown; even with the expanded nomination list (which I think is dumb), there isn't any room on there for an obligatory token nomination. I loved Harry Potter as much as anyone else, but only under duress would I describe it as a cinematic masterpiece.

I do, however, agree with Radcliffe that there's a huge amount of snobbery involved in the nomination process, and that the Academy consistently snubs commercial and younger-themed films. I wouldn't object to some acting nominations, though. Alan Rickman, for one, and maybe Maggie Smith, though her part was pretty small.

I voted No, but I did not see it! I have seen most of the other Harry Potter movies, however, and I did not like them that much. My daughter and her husband would probably disown me, because they are such huge fans!

Most of the pictures that win an Oscar are only popular with the judges- and most of the winners are movies few people have never even heard of. War Horse was nominated and hadnt even been released yet.
So yeah I think HP should have at least been nominated. I saw the Help and think the movie was kind of boring- but I loved the book. Have to say that I love the HP books and movies almost equally- and that NEVER HAPPENS

I agree with your assessment even though i am not a huge fan of the Potter books or movies. I would also add that the members of the Academy are all in the entertainment business so we must assume that their votes are, in the main, more self serving and less about the quality of the film in question. When deciding on a movie, I very seldom take into account any Oscar wins or nominations.

According to USA Today the ratings of the 83rd Oscar telecast were down 10% from the previous year. Although this may say something about the show itself, I think it says that people are less interested in the Oscars -period. If the Academy ignores Harry Potter it says a lot more about the Academy than it does about Harry Potter movies.

Agree special effects are intriguing; however, there is an award for that. Overall there are much better artistic movies more deserving and they were nominated.

I agree with him, because they put so much time and effort into it. I think he makes a valid point, that they gabby gotten any credit for all of that work they put into their movies. It was such a good movie, and you could tell that the editing team spent forever on their work, and the actors? They did amazing, the way they portrayed the emotions, and the speaking parts. It was by far, the best one in graphics and acting.
