In a week that has seen head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz almost come to blows, the National Football League has a new coaching beef to worry about: Norv Turner versus Rex Ryan. Turner's San Diego Chargers take on Ryan's New York Jets this Sunday, but the hits have started coming off the field.

Ryan, who was once interviewed for the Chargers head coaching position in 2007, took a verbal jab at Turner's lack of Super Bowl championships in a conference call with San Diego media. Transcribed by ESPN.com: "Well, I think I would have had a couple of rings [if I were San Diego's coach]," Ryan said with a laugh.

"I'm telling you, those teams were loaded. There's no question about it. But things happen for a reason. Obviously, Norv Turner has done a great job there, and [Chargers GM] A.J. (Smith) and everybody. That's a great franchise, and he's probably the best guy for the job at that time."

Turner took offense to Ryan's comments, even after the Jets coach went out of his way to call him. "I hadn't seen his quote and I was a little bit surprised by the call," Turned said. "And after I saw the quote I didn't have the chance to ask him this, but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he's guaranteed the last couple of years [with the Jets]."

Trash talking is for players, not coaches. Some players need to trash talk to get themselves psyched up for the games, but coaches shouldn't need that. I'm honestly not a fan of trash talking period, but I guess I get it. However, coaches? No. They should be more professional than that. They're the bosses and should lead a better example than that. My team has six Lombardis and I don't recall any of our three winning coaches trash talking other teams or players.

I do not recall Tom Landry or Chuck Knoll ever having to resort to trash-talking

Harbaugh and Rex Ryan are clearly insecure men

football is a trash talking sport on all fronts and coaches are not exempted. the coach sets the verbal tone for his team in how he handle his media sessions, so Rex Ryan's comments are not surprising and neither would any from his players. toughen up people it's the NFL not the Pee-Wee league sportsmanship went out the window the minute money became more important then morals and values in the NFL.

It's a competitive sport, how can you NOT expect some level of trash talk? Fan's talk smack all the time... why not coaches?

I don't mean that they "should" in the sense that I encourage it, but rather that I don't care one way or the other. Go ahead and trash talk! Or don't! Whatever.

A little immature for the coaches, but what the hell, talking smack has always been a part of sports. Besides our coach stayed low key and our Chargers are going to kick some Jet a$$ come Sunday. GO CHARGERS!!!

Like someone posted this sport is competitive and not for the faint hearted, they are confident in their teams ability so they should be able to trash talk, just limit what is trash talk and what is just being rude.

If the coach feel that way, say it...this is a competitive sport and there is too much political correctness nowadays. Let the coaches express confidence in their players/team.
Of coarse there is a limit to what should be express.

As long as they keep it to a minimum, it really makes your players want to win for you. Look how far the Jets have gotten the last two seasons with Rex Ryan.

The greats never talked trash openly. I can't picture Vince Lombardi or Tom Landry doing what Harbaugh and Schwartz did last weekend. Or George Halas talking as much smack as Rex Ryan does. Have some class. Set an example for your players.

Lead by example. True sportmanship is respecting your competition, playing your best, and accepting your win or loss like true competitors, not like a couple of neighborhood thugs......

My soccer team isn't that great but it makes me mad when I hear my coach talking trash about the other players who are trying. It's not like we're getting paid to do this anyway...

What's worse though is players insulting each other on the field/court. The other team picks up on insecurities and it just breaks the team down with the animosity.
  • trismeg... Bigbrow... 2011/10/20 22:46:22
    trismegistus
Correct me if I am wrong, but the question is not about a coach tearing down his own team, but trash talking the other team.
  • Bigbrow... trismeg... 2011/10/21 11:07:26
    Bigbrowneyes
Yeah. But trash talk towards the coach's own team is worse...I see more of a harm in my coach's way of talking than I do in this NFL's coach's trash talk.

So my above answer should have been backed up by no, it's not okay but at least it will pump up your own team.

I would refuse to shake his hand next time. I would head immediately to the locker room. What he did there I would have laid him flat and then fired his ass.

Settle it on the field if you are man enough. Don't hide behind a microphone. buncha girlymen.

Coaches are supposed to be above that.
