Should Any Player Be Compared to Michael Jordan?

There are a lot of basketball players compared to the greatest of all-time, Michael Jordan. Often times, those comparisons aren't even worth making, but in media, those things are bound to happen, especially with 24 hour news cycles. Countless players have been called Jordan's second coming: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Vince Carter early in his career, and even Harold Miner (a long-retired player called "Baby MJ" in college).

However, none of the above have come close to Jordan's positive impact on the NBA, and quite frankly, there's a good chance no one ever will. Jordan didn't just revolutionize the game with his clutch play and crazy dunks, but also made basketball and himself larger than life. He's not just a Basketball Hall of Famer. He's an entrepreneur -- an owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats and boss of Nike's legendary Air Jordan brand.

When it comes to the basketball court, according to Jordan himself, there's only one player that deserves to be compared to him. And sorry, LeBron, it's not you. Roland Lazenby, author of a book about Michael Jordan, spoke to MJ himself and shared the details on his Twitter account.

"Kobe [Bryant'] ultimate competition is MJ. That’s why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn’t human. Ditto the Kobester. I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe’s the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison." So what do you think, SportsHeads? Does five-time NBA champion and top 10 all-time great Kobe Bryant deserve the MJ comparison or should that be reserved for another phenom?

IF only as a benchmark, yes. Michael is undoubtedly the best MARKETED player out there...not to mention his long list of achievements. However, I think the person being compared has to be at a similar stage in their career. Young players should be compared to young Michael...you cant compare Michael's WHOLE career to Lebron's because they're at different places.

YOU CANT COMPARE PLAYERS FROM DIFFERENT ERAS! MJ was amazing but as one great player retires another great one comes into the league to keep the fans watching. Kobe was the one that came in towards the end of Jordan's career and Kobe is a great player too. You just can't compare them though. The players are way different than they used to be. People like Blake Griffin playing PF that can fly as high as the top of the backboard and has fairly good speed. You just can't compare.

I click "no" only because the conditions will have to be right to make such a comparison again. Jordan's greatness can be measured by two things:

    1. His own feats on the court, which were phenomenal.

    2. The era of the NBA in which he played (late 1980s-late 1990s).

The second point tells the story of how great he was. The talent pool was amazing then. Jordan walked among other giants of the game like Magic, Bird, Pippen, Malone, Stockton, Robinson, Ewing, Wilkins, Drexler, Barkley, and many others. Any one of those players mentioned would be the top player in the league today, but they were all shadowed by MJ. Look at the games back then... the scores were regularly triple digit, and teams could still play defense. Now you just pass it to your ball hog and settle for an 87-81 snoozer. Jordan's legacy is sealed into the sport. His silhouette is a corporate logo worn by players today! It will be a long time before any sport has a player like this again.

kobe doesn't compare to wilt since wilt played when it was only 2 points from anywhere other than free throws. wilt's record required making a minimum of 50some shots, kobe's record required only 28 or 29 minimum thanks to the 3pointer these days.

Sure. A guy by the name of Bill Russell won 11 rings including 9 in a row. He was the greatest of his time. Slam dunking and three pointers were not the rage back then however. It was pure basketball. Jordan, with Bird close behind was the best of his generation. MJ is a great guy as well. A close friend of our family was his tutor in college and he never forgot her. He made sure she always had great seats available when he came into town.

I consider the comparison a compliment to both of the players. A lot of people hate on Kobe because of his personal life, or how he was brought up, those are personal issues. I like Kobe as a player, and when Michael Jordan left the basketball scene, I directed my support to Kobe. I am sorry about his marriage, but I like him as a basketball player.

Mr. Jordan has done his share of dirt, and likewise he was a talented basketball player. I was so upset when he and Juanita divorced. He and Kobe have a lot in common, neither one of them had a pre-nuptial. None-the-less I enjoyed watching Michael play, loved his work ethic, and Kobe likewise. I think that Kobe is often compared to Michael.

Until another player comes along with the talent *and impact* that Jordan had, they're all going to fall short in the comparison, kind of like comparing a sixth grader who wins a chess game to Bobby Fischer.
