'Saturday Night Live' Picks a New Obama: Will You Watch the Show's Campaign 'Coverage'?

It's out with the old, in with the new. Fred Armisen won't be playing President Obama when "Saturday Night Live" returns this weekend. Instead, newer cast member Jay Pharoah will take over presidential duties.

Jay Pharoah

“Jay has been doing Obama in his act this summer, and Jay is coming into his own,” "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels told The New York Times. “I just thought it might be time to shake it up.”

Jason Sudeikis will reprise his role as Mitt Romney (he also plays Biden); Taran Killam is likely to play Paul Ryan. But Michaels admits that it's hard to make fun of Obama. Of his comedy hook, he tells the paper, "So far we haven’t found it."

The show is premiering a week early to capitalize on the political conventions. "We have at least three different takes on Clint," he said, referring to Clint Eastwood's "empty chair" speech at the RNC. Will you tune into "SNL" for election season? Or is the show simply not that funny anymore?

By the way; Obama should be really easy to make fun of. If it wasn't for the fact SNL leans to the left, they'd realize that.

We don't need a new black cast member on SNL. This guy is not funny at all. ZERO TALENT! Does SNL do this out of guilt for lack of diversity? Is this some kind of Affirmative action comedy dissension?

SNL is not the show that it used to be. I try to each it but it just is not funny anymore. Long gone are the days of Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, and the pioneers before them. The skits now ate boring, stupid, and raunchy. Bye SNL.

Jay Pharoah is very talented and most of his impressions are spot on but his Obama is not that good and Fred Armisen looks more like President Obama when he's playing him. This also tells me that good shows die because their network won't support them but shows like SNL live on even though their ratings are horrible, that's not fair.

As far as I'm concerned, SNL has been lame since the passing of the days of Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Jane Curtain, Garret Morris, John Belushi, etc. Since then it's just been stupid bravo sierra that doesn't quite hit the mark. Either that or I just grew up.

SNL hasn't really been funny in decades, the show needs badly it to go on a vacation until they can replenish a new writing staff and on air talent the materiel is old and stale, the smart ones know when to leave.

Some SNL comedians are great. Others are mediocre or worse. The last twenty years it seems like , overall , the cast has been mediocre when at its best. The original cast still leaves almost all other lineups eating its dust.

Let's face it. SNL hasn't been funny for a couple of decades now. It should have died about the time John Belushi did.

And it's skewed in favor of the Liberal agenda, more people remembered lines and/or got their news from SNL skits during the 2008 campaign than actual news, even news sources ran skits as news sources.

Skits are stupid and they usually last about 5 minutes past the point of being the least bit funny.Show has sucked since the original cast left. Chase, curtain, Radner, and Akroyd made it funny. The crap since then has sucked.

Not great as it once was. It has been mostly in the throws of death for a long time and coded at least monthly for years. The "comedy defibrillator" will only work so many times and it is really slow at making burgers!

They should have left Fred Armisen in the role. He knew how to do it. If they can't figure out the comedy hook for an arrogant, clueless, incompetent Obama, then they're letting their politics get in the way of the comedy and the show will be even less funny than it has been in the past.

I've watched SNL since its inception and love political satire, whether it pokes fun at my candidate or not. But one sided parody is not comedy. It's partisanship. I'm fed up with SNL. They have become a lobbying group for Barack Obama which makes the shows political satire very UN-funny, tastless and nasty.

The quote in this blog sums up SNL partisanship: But Michaels admits that it's hard to make fun of Obama. Of his comedy hook, he tells the paper, "So far we haven’t found it." They haven't found it because they don't want to, which is why my wife and I won't be watching their debute or any other show.

In point of fact, I enjoy shows that make fun of both. I certainly don't mind a liberal show poking fun at conservatives or a conservative show making fun of liberals. But you understand where they're coming from and I love political parody of all kinds.

The point with SNL is that they are supposed to make fun of both, which they do not. They rip into Romney constantly to the point of tedium. At the same time, they have NEVER created parody relative to Obama. This makes them partisan and phony.

Last night was the first time in the history of SNL that my wife and I didn't watch their first show of the season. We watched the comedy show "Wilfred" and the movie classic "Dial M for Murder." We are fed up with SNL because they don't even have the guts to admit to having an agenda. That's my point.

You have obviously missed a few sketches. There are a few that are pretty scathing referring to Obama's failure todo anything whilein office. Also, their depiction of Joe Biden is less than flattering. They've had Sarah Palin herself on the show and they've invited and had other conservative politicians on there. They used Will Farrell to depict Janet Reno. I think you see what you want to see. I think SNL is a cast full of liberals and libertarians who do a good job of making fun of both side, but at the same time aren't afraid.to wear their political affiliations on their sleeve. It's a tough line to walk, but they do it well.

I fear you are still missing my point. Rarely do I ever miss SNL and I say this over a period of decades. I never claimed that SNL doesn't poke fun at Biden, Clinton and others. They simply give Barack Obama a Pass.

A pass on what? They make fun of him about as much as they made fun of George W. Bush. Off the top of my head I can thin of three sketches; one I which they made fun of the fact that we're so far in debt to the Chinese government and another where they made fun of the fact that he's done pretty much nothing while in office and another making fun of him trying to take all the credit for Osama Bin Laden's [alleged] death. I think org conservatives and liberals are only able to see when they're being attacked and never notice when their oppositions is being attacked. I guess that's human nature, though.

You've got me on the Chinese skit. It was very funny. I'd forgotton. You get a rave for reminding me. But we depart relative to your claiming they make as much fun of Obama as they did for Bush. There was no comparison. Bush was portreyed as a ditherring idiot on many occasions.

I like the way you say "Bin Laden's [alleged] death." If he was actually killed, I could never figure out why Obama put out a kill order on him. The man was unarmed and it would have proved much more productive to take him back for interrogation. It doesn't make sense other than reaching for a quick political benefit.

But let's look at this legally: If you had a life insurance police on Bin Laden and I was an insurance claims adjuster, I'd never pay off on the policy. We have no body. No photos have ever been presented to the public although Obama routinely brags about it. We have no DNA evidence. All we ever had was DNA from a Bin Laden family member and the family numbers in the thousands.

Half tongue in cheek, I tell people that it's entirely possible that Bin Laden is in a government witness protection program. He's living retired in Florida under the name of Bernie Leibowitz and spends his time relaxing on a chase lounge, wearing a Yarmalka and munching on Kosher Pastrami Sandwiches. LOL.

Good enough, but in SNL's defense, Bush was a dithering idiot just like Obama is a smug attention whore.
