The game is the game. The NFL plays 4 full quarters, that's rules. Making exceptions would ruin the game.

People pay to see these men so they might as well play the whole game out.

But the rule needs to be agreed upon well in advance by the league owners.
But this argues for expected gross incompetency, does it not?

New Orleans ran the ball not running up the score any more. Games like these allow the second stringers time against live competition.

I for one Love to watch them play and if the other team can't stop you then so be it, this isn't high school football any more it's the NFL.. Teams that loose real bad have to pick them selves up by their boot straps and learn from the experience, the same with the team scoring a lot of points, who knows it could very well make them better players, or the next team gunning for them.

it´s not a question of mercy but spirits of sports.
a team deserves to play the whole time(both).
it´s not as if the score was what the game is aboud, it´s the game what puts a meaning to some numbers.
anyone participating in a game want´s to bring it to an end and if the game wasn´t one to be played, why would they have done so?.

I think teams should forfeit more often. There are times when it's just sad to watch (I know -- my home team is Denver) and the only thing that's really on the line is players possibly getting injured.

I mean come on a loss is a loss if they call the game based on the mercy rule would I think it would be just as bad because how would they decide the point differences i can be 21 because I have seen teams come back and win from that so then what,

I say yes it was a beat down (and what a spectacular one at that) but that gives them something to think about, like not putting your eggs in one basket for one

I think so. There is no point in making a come back when the team is so far ahead in the game. It's time to wave that white flag. white flag

Because the NFL plays 4 quarters. I doubt the NFL will change or start handicapping games.

hmm Then NFL need to ponder hard! For me it makes sense for mercy rule. I can see where you are coming from. I think there no right answer just yet.

It will never happen. Also points for and against can be a tiebreaker so it could determine the standings.
  • ohsmith... Bob DiN 2011/10/28 00:37:34
    ohsmith ☮ R P ☮ 2012 ☮
well would those points determine for the white flag for the standing?
  • Bob DiN ohsmith... 2011/10/28 01:05:21
    Bob DiN
Not for those in contention for a playoff spot. Those who are in the hunt for the playoffs give their all to make it. Remember NFL Football is a competitive sport.
  • ohsmith... Bob DiN 2011/10/28 01:54:43
    ohsmith ☮ R P ☮ 2012 ☮
Is all sport competitive? Would they lose points for their standing for the playoff spot because they are so far behind? OR its all about money! With the no mercy rule they would have to stop the game and those TV ads won't be too happy!

Mercy rules takes the fun out of the game. Once you have a certain point cushion, you probely should start playing conservative old-school power football and see if they can stop you but the game should still go on till the clock runs out. If the game has a mercy rule that calls all these sort of games off, than it hurts both teams. Only way I'd agree to a mercy rule is if under bad weather and if more than two and a half quarters have been played and one team has a 36+ point lead when the weather delay has been called than they should be able to call the game under that circumstance on a mercy rule but only in that sort of case.
