Ryan Lochte Wants to Trademark 'Jeah': Totally Cool or What a Tool?

The Ryan Lochte publicity machine churned louder than almost anyone’s during the London Summer Olympics this year. But it seems like a distant hiss now that the post-closing ceremony gold medalist is tooting his own horn all over Hollywood. After all, he comes complete with a movie-star-sized ego, abs of steel and his own catch phrase. “Jeah!”

ryan lochte

Rapper MC Eiht has come forward to say that “Jeah!” has been his for years. And Lochte credits Young Jeezy for coining the word, which he pronounced ch-ea, in his songs. But Lochte has put his own spin on it by changing the “ch” sound back to a “ja” sound. Is this a joke or something?

As Lochte so eloquently described it at a recent press event, “It means like almost like everything. Like happy. Like if you have a good swim you say, ‘Jeah.’ Like it’s good. Like, so I guess it means good.” Lochte may also consider trademarking the word "like" since he, like, says it a lot.

According to his application for a trademark, there are a lot of things that could carry this upbeat tag. Lochte is considering mass marketing swim goggles with the phrase, as well as key chains, water bottles, even gift cards. Just image it, “Happy Birthday to the World’s Best Grandma. Jeah!”

The guy has a pair of shoes that leave his name in the sand when he walks. That has to be the biggest sign of a douchebag I have ever seen.

Maybe he can talk to Paris Hilton about it. Grats on your golds and silvers. I have no interest in anything else about his life.

All we need is more reality "stars". I must be the only one that cringes when my kids turn on the TV.

The phrase is too common (somewhere...? Idk where) to be taken as his catch phrase, though.

Today I found why we will go to 2017 for economy recovery. We just want to stay poor; World stocks were mixed on Tuesday on renewed uncertainties over the European debt crisis, after a short-lived rally in Asia driven by the Chinese central bank's move to ease tight liquidity through open market operations. Early gains were supported by lingering hopes that the European Central Bank might buy bonds to help some European countries reduce their borrowing costs, though such speculation has been countered by denials by ECB officials of such plans, and signs from Germany that it opposes such moves. In early European trading, the FTSE-100 index of leading British companies rose 0.6 percent to 5,859.03 while Germany's DAX advanced 0.7 percent to 7,079.46. France's CAC-40 climbed 0.8 percent to 3,509.79. Wall Street looked set to open higher. Dow Jones industrial futures rose 0.2 percent to 13,256 while S&P; 500 futures added 0.2 percent to 1,417.50. Investors are looking for progress from Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' visits this week to Germany and France, where he is expected to request an extension of Greece's deadline to meet fiscal targets as the country carries out painful reforms. If you're going to label Lochte as a tool for self promotion, list yourself in that category. Any star, and wanna-be star, any business, or any person or entity that self promotes could be considered a tool because they self promote. Lochte is not a tool because he self promotes, he's a tool because of his personality.

Lochte has all the right in the world to self promote. He's simply doing what a lot of other people have done who have come into the light of the media. For example, Michael Phelps did a lot of self promotion after the 2008 Olympics. Sara Palin is the queen of self promotion because she is still riding a failed VP attempt. Apallo Ono is doing it. What Lochte is doing is no different from what other athletes and personalities have done. The difference with Lochte is he is not being shy about it.

So you mentioned 4 tools. So I guess you are correct.

    Phelps, Palin, Ono and Lochte.

Well I kinda like Ono.. Not sure how he fits in your list.

I like Ono also. My point was if your going to go after Lochte for self promotion, you will have to after every athlete who self promotes. Because Lochte is more in your face about it doesn't make him worse, it just makes him more assertive.

Why shouldn't he cash in on his sudden but sure to be limited fame?

You should have put an option for total INDIFFERENCE--every athlete wants to have a product endorsement, and in all truth, that's no different for any athlete in any sport. They pay a huge amount of money into training, coaches, etc. He won a gold medal--how many of us can claim that...
