Album covers have delivered some of the most iconic photography in pop culture history. Most rock fans will instantly recognize the image of the Beatles striding across “Abbey Road.” Punk devotees know that a hunched-over Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Bass represents The Clash’s “London Calling.” And modern rock fans know that that wide-eyed boy is the face of U2’s “War.”
Now, ESPN The Magazine is paying tribute to some of music’s most famous album art by recreating classic photos for their first-ever music issue.
And they’ve recruited Olympic gold-medalist Ryan Lochte to pose for grunge’s most infamous offering: Nirvana's "Nevermind" album.
The original features a naked baby floating in the water reaching for a dollar bill on a fishing hook. In the tribute shot, the London Game’s media darling does a pretty close approximation. But the star of the upcoming reality show "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" clearly has his limits.
Apparently, Lochte won’t pose nude. Much to the disappointment of many fans, no doubt, the champion swimmer didn't match the cover exactly. Unlike the original model, three-month-old Spencer Elden, Lochte wore a Speedo for his shot.
It’s certain that this is the most talked about photo in the ESPN series, which also includes Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman lounging for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and NFL stars Trent Richardson, Lamarr Woodley and Marshawn Lynch posing as Run DMC. What do you think? Is Lochte’s cover hilarious or horrible?
