Rookie Picks Law School Over NFL: What Would You Pick?

Undrafted rookie linebacker Andrew Sweat played at Ohio State and he's continuing his education. It just won't be on the football field. While not selected in the 2012 NFL Draft, Sweat did sign with the Cleveland Browns in free agency. However, don't expect him to be making tackles unless he has a serious change of heart. Sweat has opted to go to law school to eventually become a lawyer.

Sweat gives up one dream to follow another. Deadspin had an article recently stating that despite the health risks of football, Sweat was making a big mistake not pursuing a career as a professional athletes. Considering the minimum NFL salary is a little less than $400,000, they may be right, but there's no guarantees, especially with being undrafted.

Since Deadspin's article was published, Sweat made a statement via his official Twitter, telling everyone his reasons for not going into professional football and why he'll be just fine in law school. Sweat said that he wants to avoid concussion risks and that “health trumps football any day.” And even most recently, Sweat revealed he has a good setup (his dad has a successful law firm he could transition to.) Hey, at least he's honest, right? What do you think of rookie Andrew Sweat's decision?

1 year of warming the bench at the league minimum would still be enough to pay off all of your law school debt several times over. Take the money, play for 1-2 seasons (warm the bench if you have to), pay off school, and set up your own practice debt free. No-brainer buddy. Aren't lawyers having a hard time getting work after school as it is right now? Get that debt cleared.

The NFL's minimum wage is higher than a law school graduates salary. There are so many lawyers in DC that even lawyers say that there are too many And no doubt the same in all metro areas. Stay in the league a few years, retire and then go to school. A few years in the NFL would earn him enough to pay for his grad school, live comfortably while studying and be way ahead of his classmates when he graduates.

But I'd go to law school in the off season; you never know when your career might be cut short, and you DEFINITELY know it will end some day, and not everyone is the best investor.

I think he could continue his schooling while being a a low-end player. Figure you get to play in the big time, even for a few years, it would pay for law school completely and he could live comfortably not having to work the whole time you were getting your education.

Dr Dan Doornink, running back for the Seahawks used his nfl money to pay for med school. It is possible to do both, but it takes a special guy.

Sports careers can disappear in a heartbeat with an injury and sometimes with just a poorly chosen word spoken in public. A career as an attorney will last longer.

It's good to know the laws, so people can't walk all over you.NFL is a good sport, and those who are more interesting in sport than knowing about the law will choose like wise.

Good for him! In the NFL, you're only as good as your last game, and your career can end in an instant due to an injury. I worked for a year as a teaching assistant to a former S.F. Forty-niner, who developed arthritus in his twenties from playing, and was very thankful for an education degree from Villanova, and a teaching credential. He always emphasized to his students the importance of an education, and a career that can last a lifetime; even if they "made it big" in pro sports or music, or whatever.

A very hard decision and I respect and admire Andrew Sweat's decision. Let's face it, playing in the NFL has a few upsides.. money potential, fame, the ability to say you are/were one of the few who made it, and always, can go on to college later if so desired. But, who knows what the quality of your life will be after playing those NFL years. He obviously has a brain and I'm sure from reading his statements.. he knows what he's doing. Good for him.. but I know, sadly, if it were me... I'd be in the NFL in a flash. :)

Yup, just 1 or 2 seasons warming bench or 4-5 if he hits the bigs then finish school and at least he'll get some respect !! As Rodney said and should cover lawyers, "I don't get no respect " !!!! Start with respect then work your way down with collage debt paid off !!!!

Of course, I wouldn't have the athletic choice. But an athletic career has its limits. You're over the hill at forty. A lawyer never goes over the hill. He eventually becomes a judge.
