RIP Don Cornelius

RIP Don Cornelius
The Soul Train has left the station. Don Cornelius, the smooth voiced conductor who brought us all the best soul, R & B, and funk music of the 70's and 80's died Feb 1 at the age of 75 from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been very ill for some time and the details of his death are still unclear.

From The Wall Street Journal:
"Don Cornelius was the engineer of what he called "the hippest trip in America," a televised dance party that lasted 35 years. "Soul Train" showcased top black acts singing—or more often lip-syncing—for a studio jammed with dancers sporting wide lapels, capacious bell bottoms and huge afros. The show introduced black style to Americans of every shade and ethnicity and was syndicated nationally by nearly 100 stations...A funky animated train and the theme song "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" were the long-running introduction to the show, forever imprinted on the minds of millions of television viewers."

I had friends that would come over to my house to watch...because their parents were such a-holes, not black shows on their t.v.! Fun, awesome show! Thanks Don for entertaining us!

I'm so sad to hear this news. I just loved watching this iconic music and dance TV show.
Listening Don Cornelius' smooth deep sexy voice is like listening to Barry White sing a song. Rest in Peace Don, you will be deeply missed.

Same here! Our local high schools would let us kids use their tennis courts in the summer to hear Motown and other artists so we could dance off all that energy lol. In the winter we used KOC Halls (Knights Of Columbus). The Grande Ball Room in Detroit was also a hot spot to gather and GET DOWN ;-)

Mr. Cornelius opened up doors for alot of musical artists. I't was an awesome show started by a need for young black Americans that enjoyed Dick Clark but rarely if ever saw other ethnic teenagers on the show dancing or in the audience. The TV industry also thrived because of this one intelligent and resourceful man. Rest in peace Mr. Cornelius.
