In the longest game of "will he or won’t he?" in quite some time, the guessing game surrounding Randy Jackson’s return to “American Idol” has finally come to an end... hopefully. TMZ is reporting that the “American Idol” Dawg will not come back to the judge’s table for Season 12, but will play the part of mentor in the next go-around. Let the replacement rumors begin!

Randy Jackson

Up until now, Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson have been the only members of the cast to participate in every season. But with the musician/producer’s departure, Seacrest is the last man standing. Many thought Jackson would stick around long enough to help his long-time collaborator Mariah Carey settle in as a new judge. But it looks like Mimi’s on her own.

So far, the names rising to the top of the speculation game are Nicky Minaj, Keith Urban and Nick Jonas. Allegedly, Carey and Minaj butt heads making her pending contract a difficult decision but an exciting potential for conflict for the producers. As for Randy, no word on what he’ll do next, but many feel it’s time for him to move on and re-energize the show with some new blood. What do you think about Randy leaving? Will the show be doomed with a completely new judges panel?

I'm fearing that it is on its way out... I will miss Randy's presence and comments, but at least he isn't gone from the show and would be a good mentor. It's just that he has been sort of the "anchor" after the other two originals left.

What bothers me is WHO may be added to the panel - it's not looking good.

The show has been a bust for the last several years. Randy Jackson staying or leaving won't affect it. This show has run its course, it's time to pull the plug.

Idol has been tanking for a few years now. Pull the plug because it costs too much for that prime time spot. Come up with something new, like a drama. We're sick of panel judge talent shows.

They were the first show of its kind that all the other dumb shows copied.
  • Ben Constan... 2012/09/05 12:03:18

True. They were the first. It still doesn't change the fact that the show has very low ratings and something needs to be done.

Well, it has continued to change, but I thought they said the ratings were always good, up until last year. I think a lot of people didn't care for Steven.. (he didn't bother me).

I have thought for some while that it would be winding down and with things going this way, it will most likely be their last season. Everything ends sometime.

I think it was the first year the English guy left (why can't I think of his name) Simon Cowell! It was then that the show started going downhill. Even though the talent changes each year, people are still seeing the same thing. So, they change the judges to spice things up. I think Steven Tyler was an awful choice for a show like that. However, America's Got Talent got Howard Stern, and regardless of what people feel about the guy, he is dead-honest and I think thats what people want to see. Besides, AGT has many different acts besides singing. You never know what you are going to see. BUT, with Idol, you know its going to be the same thing...singing. So to keep it interesting they change the judges. I think they should change the rules of the show. Either that or move it to a later spot. Who knows. We'll see soon enough.

Simon Cowell, who is in charge of the other show, "X-Factor" and had been with the European versions of "Idol" from the beginning. I don't recall if he started it. I found I don't care for that show, OR "The voice", or the "Talent" show, which is too much like a circus for me. But, that's why they have many options.

Anyway, that is what the show was designed for - singing. Paula left too, and they kept trying different judges - coming and going for their own reasons. I think it can be a bit much for them. So, as we say, it is probably nearly over with. Even the best shows ever end for some reason or another.

What bothers me the most is that the average judge makes 20 million a season, while the winner gets 1 million paid out over 40 years. lol. awful.
  • Constan... Ben 2012/09/10 06:53:21
    Constant Commenter
Wow. As long as I've watched, I actually didn't know that was the way the payment worked for winners. That doesn't seem so great.

Yes, and what are the judges doing for 20 million? I guess because they might be famous. I have a good ear, I hear immediately if contestants are hitting notes or not and could also critique some, but, of course I'm a nobody.. so, no 20 million. : )
  • Ben Constan... 2012/09/13 15:59:21
    Ben
If you watch the bottom of the screen at either the begininng or end of the show, it says in small fine print "one million dollars is paid to the winner over the span of 40 years." The reason judges make so much is because they are the ones who bring the ratings, which makes sure the sponsors get seen during comercial break.

Ahh... I guess I never focused on the fine print! Yeah, well it's a bummer, is seemingly on it's last legs. The judges might ruin it for me.

And thats why they get paid the big bucks. I'm actually anticipating to see who replaces Sharon Osbourne on AGT.

Idol was being doomed while Randy was there. It started losing it's luster after the 3rd season and has went down hill ever since.

It was doomed when Simon left the show. I haven't even watched it since then. Getting rid of Randy is just digging the hole just a little bit deeper.

As controversial as the original judges were with Simon brutally blunt and callous and Paula more than once ditzy, the program was about the talent in most of the seasons. Then as replacements came onboard, it seemed about the talent of the judges.

I often felt that some of the criticism of the participants gave opportunity to do better. I now feel that some judges imply that "the contestants are not as good as we". If Randy goes, the show just becomes talented judges fending off competition.

No, it is not the judges that make the show a success. It is the talent that makes the show a success. The Fox Network can find countless new judges, it's the new talent that is hard to find.

It's been somewhat doomed anyway without the entire original cast. I think The Voice is a much better show.
