Rent is a little more socially conscious, where as high school musical is pretty much just fluff for the younger viewers. While there is nothing wrong in that - it's nice to not have to think about serious issues for a while - it does put rent in an entirely different category and makes it a better production in my humble opinion.

... yah. no. Rent will always win. ;3 Angel's my favorite. XD I cried so hard during his funeral and death scenes. it broke my heart.

Like every one else has said; Rent is based on Real Life events, and what everyone, regardless of age (in some aspects) deal with on a day to day basis. It's more real than High School Musical (Which really wasn't all that fair or even remotely close to what really goes on. :[)

So. Rent is the best out of these two. I've only seen the movie, though. :/

HSM is realistic with the romance and heartbreak of High school lfe, but come on! No one SINGS about it! Does anyone talking here walk through the halls of their school with their friends and spontaniously break into song and dance about failing a test or something?! RENT beats HSM without a doubt, it's WAAY more powerful, plus it actually has a message to send out to everyone! HSM: Teaches people about singing and dancing randomly. RENT: Teaches how everyone should be loved and appreciated. It shows the power of heartbreak through huge breakups, disease and worse, death.

Rent is actually alot better than High School Musical. HSM is just one of those get together, break up and then make up kind of things whereas Rent is dealing with things like being a homosexual, fighting AIDS, and death. Rent is more of a musical on real like. The story of Johnathan Larson just makes it all the more better.

Rent, easy, it's more mature, it's not corny and it actually has issues that are in real life, not just "he loves me, he loves me not"

By the way a high school in north Texas was going to put on RENT but because of bad publicity, the school board stopped the production. The reason people protested: "It deals with drug use, sexuality, etc. and it is not appropriate for teenagers." But High schoolers talk about that all the time, so am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

RENT and High School Musical are completely different things. On one hand, you have a gritty, down-to-earth, emotionally devastating, epic story of love and friendship and living in the moment and appreciating life... and on the other hand, you have a Disney money scheme.

No disrespect to any HSM lovers out there, but I never really understood all the hype about it.

RENT has a well thought out story to it, with characters with personalities and real issues to it.

Why even ask? Rent is fantastic, moving, meaningful, and great music. HSM is stupid, dull, cheesy, and irritating "singers" with crap music. I mean, HSM is for little children, and Rent is for a much broader crowd. Rent wins, no contest here.

I turned off High School Musical after about 2 minutes. Too ridiculous. RENT is amazing and has meat to it.

I have also known RENT for longer. I was exposed to the music in junior high and fell in love without even seeing the play.
