R.E.M. Tells Fox News to Stop Playing 'Losing My Religion': Are You on Team Michael Stipe or Team Fox?

You!

R.E.M. is NOT a fan of Fox News. Last week, the band asked the cable news network to stop playing "Losing My Religion" during its coverage of the Democratic National Convention.

Michael Stipe

"R.E.M.'s 'Losing My Religion' was used in the Fox News coverage of the Democratic National Convention last night," the band wrote on their website last Thursday. "R.E.M. today, through its music publisher, Warner-Tamerlane Music, demanded that Fox News cease and desist from continuing its unlicensed and unauthorized use of the song."

The band's frontman, Michael Stipe, added: "We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there." Do you think Stipe is right about the network? Or are you on Team Fox all the way?

Doesnt matter if he's right about fox or not. It's his song, he can decided who to allow to use it.

Well then, if that is how it is done, he should. I've wondered how Joe Scarboro got away with his playlist.

Neither - If he no longer owns the song, who gives a happy damn. If he does, then he gets royalties

He gets royalties - IF he allowed the song to be used in the first place, which he clearly did not.

If he still owns it - he did not say he did, and i suspect he does not given his words

I'm pretty sure he does. A group as big as R.E.M.? You wanna bet they retain the rights to their music.

Now, sure, but far too many (including big stars) sold rights early on - I don't know on this one, and, when all is said and done, do not care.

    Have a good one

Whatever the reason they don't want it to be played there, it's their song and they have all the rights.

Republicans are famous (or infamous) for ripping off music without permission. Musicians have rights to their work. I stand with Michael Stipe, Bruce Springstein, John Cougar Mellancamp, and the long list of musicians who have had to fight them or file lawsuits. Republicans cannot steal other people's music just because they themselves have no originality. Their actions are beneath pond scum.

His song is a part of BMI of which FOX NEWS has a license, as does all TV and radio stations. They have a right to use it because Stipe sold that right. Stipe is another whinning liberal musician who is making noise for publicities' sake, and it is working.

WRONG! If Stipe still owns a controlling interest in the publishing rights he can stop them from using it. Stipe is another principled artist who won't let a fascist network purport their diabolical right-wing agenda with the use of his intellectual property.

Have you seen REM's tax returns?

Romney will release (the rest) of his tax returns his third year in office. Obama set the precedent.

Oh wait, tax returns are not required in the constitution so I guess you will have to pound on it.

Yep, in fact I have I prepared them myself. REM has paid every penny they owe.

Actually, he can't legally stop it. No more than he can stop 1 person from playing his music on their iPod. It is called copyrights. Stipe gets a check and that's the end of it. They were not using it for good a and services.

Actually he can make Fox Stop. Fox and anyone else that plays someone elses music, have to pay to the musician in order to play their music. It is part of the copyrights... especially if it is a company
  • Command... Osk The... 2012/09/11 15:32:36

No. The license holder is not always the musicians, it is the company that produced their music. This is why certain songs are not allowed to be played by a band.

So long as the company has secured the rights, they can distribute it to whomever they wish without the consent of the musicians. This isn't always the case, but a company wants to know they control the distribution of your music before they readily drop the cash on your lap.

If this isn't the case for screenwriters, it surely isn't the case for songwriters.

I could care less, but voted and leaving a piece of someone else's mind; I am spent! I am sure this REM folks get compensated and so they are paid and can voice their opinion and did, so move on! On the other hand, Fox should not use that music and pick on someone else to mess with as they are fair, balanced and sexy!

Stipe grew up a typical middle class socialist brat until he graduated to "limousine liberal". REM is a prolific producer of very catchy tunes but their politics has always been way to the left. Go eat a croissant, Stipe!

It is his intellectual property and has a right to see it used or not used as he sees fit. He's been fed up with American politics for years and is in fact an expat living in France. Furthermore the song is about losing patience ( which losing my religion is old southern slang for losing ones patience) and nothing to do with religion in the slightest.
