Last month, one of the novels that made our list of suggested summer reading for books that are being made into movies was Stephenie Meyer's The Host. Unlike Meyer's Twilight series, which is a more romance-focused vampire drama, The Host
is a sci-fi story about a human and an alien who share the same body.
There are some romantic elements, but I think it's the relationship
between human Melanie and Wanderer, the alien who's inhabited Melanie's
body, that's the more interesting relationship explored within the
story.
The Host takes place after a race of aliens have invaded earth
and inhabited the human population, leaving a small percentage of
resisting humans to hide out in an effort to avoid being taken over by
"souls." In anticipation of the feature adaptation, which stars Saoirse
Ronan as Melanie/Wanderer, Stephenie Meyer has added an introduction to
the story, which lays out the set-up, explaining a little bit about what
the aliens are, how they came to take over earth, how they dealt with
the eventual human resistance and where the story picks up in The Host.
It's been a while since I've read the book, so I can't say with all
certainty that any of the information included in the introduction is
new (meaning, not mentioned at some point throughout the story), however
it's a quick read and a decent breakdown of the set-up for those on the
fence about reading the book and/or eventually seeing the movie.
The introduction is followed by an excerpt from the book, for those not
averse to sampling a story by jumping into the middle. And for the
super-fans who want to save this intro, the widget below includes the
option to download it.
THE HOST by Stephenie Meyer, the author of THE TWILIGHT SAGA. Read the excerpt. In theaters 3/29!
