PUBLIC OPINION > 'The X Factor' Should Increase Its Age Limit

SodaHead TV 2011/12/12 17:00:00
Everything seemed to be going just fine when Rachel Crow and Marcus Canty stood on the "X Factor" stage waiting for a vote. Crow, 13, had been singing her little heart out for weeks, and looked as emotionally straight as Simon Cowell. But as soon as those words slipped out, crushing Crow's hopes of reaching the top, it all came crumbling down -- literally. Crow was on the floor, Nicole Scherzinger looked like she had peered into the Ark of the Covenant, and Cowell's heart almost started beating.

The scene had us thinking: Should kids really be allowed to perform in these kinds of things? "American Idol" requires contestants to be 15, probably to avoid just that. So we asked SodaHeads what they thought.

Young 'X Factor' Contestant Breaks Down: Should They Up the Age Limit?

rachel crow

53% Say Up the Age

Surprisingly, this was a controversial topic. The decision was almost split, and there were excellent arguments on both sides. Those who favored a higher age limit were generally concerned about the kids' well-being, warning, "They hype up these emotionally fragile children just for ratings." But respondents who were okay with the current age limit (12 years old) thought kids could handle it, and that the parents should be able to determine if the kid isn't ready. One compared the contest to running for school office, pointing out that it might be painful but it's not the end of the world.

chart

Women Don't Want an Age Change

Scherzinger looked horrified when she saw Crow break down, but Scherzinger's reaction was not a representation of the female vote here. Most women think the age limits in place are fine. The top comment, from a female voter, read, "It's the parents' decision to let their child on the show."

The Kids Want In

Teens want their voices heard, too. The older a voter is, the more likely they are to support a higher age limit. Teens, the ones who might actually be affected by the change, were only 32% in favor of it. Voters over 55 were 71% in favor.

Say No If You're Sober

While drinkers voted along with the overall vote, nondrinkers came in well below the average, with just 38% in favor of an age change. Maybe drinkers aren't sure how the younger contestants can be expected to calm their nerves before the vote.

Sometimes you lose at 13...sometimes you lose at 43. If it's a competition, you just might lose... Didn't anybody prepare the kids that they just might not be the winner? AND # 5 out of the whole country is pretty daggone good!! It kinda made me mad with all the sobbing last week and the week before. I'm sure it's an emotional competition but it IS a competition. I don't think children are ready for such a heavy competition.

Of course not there r soo many talented kids out there n by the time people feel that they reach an "apprpraite" age some1will hav come along and crushed the dreams of that child and when they do that the world mite miss out on a young beyonce or james brown. talent comes in all shapes n sizes@all ages there should b no age limit on a show just a maturity level make sure that the contestants r aware of and kno the possiblities of the show not just the good possibilities but the bad ones as well. that way ppl will come on the show more prepared n just bcuz the girl cried doesnt mean she wasnt old enough there many ppl that cry on tv as she did and some worse

Rachel Crow ( A budding Borderline Personality Disorder) What a little drama queen. These contestants get their egos inflated by these judges without any real thought put into it by the judges when they give them feedback. Simon is into this show for the bank and you better believe it. The judges comments killed off Stacie Francis (My favorite!!) and this resulted in a numb public who wouldn't know talent if it bit them on the ass voting her off. These shows exploit people and are popularity, not talent contests.

Not so much up the age, Mentors need to prepare them so they can handle it more maturely. Rather than I love you speech woteva, and breaking down and crying like a baby. DEAL with it you got low scores they didnt believe in your performance.

Melanie she can sing but her performances are BORING She should up her game.

I think teens can be on here.. It good form them it makes them feel stronge and put their best to it.. It helps them even tho it might hurt them cuz they dont win but it also makes them feel good to be on stage and make them feel like they can do something if the put their mind to it.

I think it really depends on the maturity of the kids and how well they can take the heat mentally. Having a great singing voice will get you so far, but if you don't make it to the very top and win, then it's best to be mentally/emotionally prepared and accept how far you've gone. Rachel's very lucky that she made it so far even at her young age, but perhaps she wasn't emotionally prepared to losing just yet.

This is just my guess and opinion! I'm not saying I'm right!

I'm British and our X Factor requires you to be 16. maybe Simon should have that for America too. I dunno, when you go on the show you should be prepared for just that. Also, parent's should prepare their children by telling them that it's okay to not win everything and that, if you want something in life, no matter how many times you may 'fail' or not entirely win something you have to keep working hard and you'll get to where you want to be. I'm 13 and i understand that. x

Having been in that position myself it is particularly painful seeing that on screen, but they must learn to take rejection and deal with it...it is what the music industry expects of you in the real world.

Most contestants cry when they have performed well, or when they are voted on to the next level. A breakdown of this magnitude tells me this girl is too immature to be competing at this level. Sure, I've seen tears when someone's hopes get dashed, and they may tear up and walk off stage, but this was over the top.

Yes, you are correct that contestants break down when they lose, but they usually just tear up and walk off. They don't end up in a sobbing heap on the floor. Immature girl. She needs another year or two before she goes to the big leagues. Or else she's just too much into the drama of it and looking for a reaction or sympathy. In which case she's an immature girl...

I don't think her age has anything to do with it...when you want something that bad and work for it but don't get it, sometimes, people just have that reaction.

I remember when I got the news that my first choice college accepted me but didn't give me any financial aid. I was 18, and yes, I was rolling around on the floor wailing like a little bitch...something about being really close and then just missing it is spectacularly painful, regardless of how old you are. I was in my room at home when it happened and no one was around to see, but still...it hurts. If you've been in that position, then you know.

But I've seen performers on AGT and they worked really hard and wanted it so bad and didn't break down. This girl broke down. The younger you are the more vulnerable you are. It is partly because of her age. You were not on national tv when you cried because you didn't get financial aid. When you have young contestants it makes it harder and it can send people who have more talent home because people don't want to send the kid home.

I don't think they should increase the age limit - but I do think they should carefully interview and counsel the younger contestants to see if they understand the ups and downs of a competition. So in addition to their talent, they need to be evaluated to determine whether they have the back bone to participate. If they can't take the heat, then they need to get out of the kitchen.

The problem with the X-Factor is that the judges aren't judging objectively. They have a vested interested in seeing their contestant go through - voting for them even when they clearly didn't make the grade. Last week was horrible to witness. You had a judge (Nicole), who didn't want to judge! WTF is she doing there if she can't take the heat? Nicole should have been kicked off the show, and Rachel put in her place (LOL).

Rachel was amazing last week. And while she did have a meltdown, I saw her being interviewed afterwards and it did seem she pulled herself together.

I predict Canty will go home this week.

How do you take anybody that young seriously, she has a great voice and talent, but how can she sing from the heart about emotions she has no clue about yet. She portrayed the perfect example of why they should up the age limit, she is still a child.........and should be allowed to live like one, out of the public eye, it was horrible witnessing that break down, and any responsible parent should not have put her in that position.

There are a lot of child stars who do very well, and many who don't. It goes for adults too. If parents can't teach their children to be objective and level headed then its not the fault of the x-factor. But I must rave that if a child wants to have a normal childhood they should be entitled.

No, I do not think they should increase the age limit. I believe the judges should do their jobs or be replaced with judges who will. It is ridiculous to have a sing off and then proceed to judge under different criteria. The little girl Rachel sang her butt off and mopped the floor with Canty. She was cheated by the judges L.A. Reid and Nicole ???. Even if the person is from your team, you should vote according to the sing off performances period. I have never seen anything other than karaoke talent in Marcus Canty. He is an enigma on the X factor as far as I am concerned. I pray he goes home next week.

Of course not. Children are not ready to be put under than kind of pressure. If they have a talent, then that talent will still be there in a few years time. Nurture that talent, until they are old enough to go on. Putting kids through that kind of thing isn't good.

Wow some harsh words on here she's only 13 and ofcourse she'd react that one bitch judge knew what she was doing. Rachel crow sang amazingly Marcus should have been voted out 3 weeks ago. I mean 2 other great performers went home because of him and now Rachel crow.

It came to a shock to see her go. I would've reacted aswell her hopes were crushed.

As for age do you think honestly that has anything to do with a reaction?

So every time a reaction happens people say we should increase the age a bit "HELL NO!! "

I had a reaction when Pia Toscano from American idol was voted off.

This goes to show people running their mouths without even watching the show should just buzz off.
