PUBLIC OPINION > 'The Big Bang Theory' Is Your Favorite (Money-Making) Show on TV

SodaHead TV 2012/04/11 21:32:55
The TV shows that bring in the most ad revenue aren't always the ones with the best critical response, and just because there are a lot of people watching "American Idol" or "The X Factor," that doesn't mean they're the best shows on television. But when Forbes published a list of the top 10 money-makers on TV, we jumped at the chance to find out which of those shows actually got the best response. We had a feeling it wouldn't be "Idol."

sodahead big bang theory

Bazinga! Talk about a landslide victory. With 10 of the most-watched shows on TV to pick from, "The Big Bang Theory" still managed to take half the vote. In fact, a lot of respondents commented that it's the only show on the list they watch (ever since Charlie Sheen left "Two and a Half Men"). Top-notch writing, classic sitcom scenarios, Jim Parsons' Emmy-winning performance as Sheldon, and nerd-focused humor make "The Big Bang Theory" the most popular money-maker on the tube.

Older Folks Like "Dancing"

Well, there aren't a whole lot of stats to work with since the 51% of the vote not dedicated to "The Big Bang Theory" is divided up between nine other shows, but there was a single age group that didn't make it their No. 1 pick: Voters over 65 preferred "Dancing With the Stars." That's it. Everyone else picked "Big Bang."

"Glee" Vs. "Two and a Half Men"

We did what we could with the minuscule remainder votes, and found that men and women disagreed on two shows in particular. Men were particularly uninterested in "Glee" (4% compared to women's 11%), while women were particularly uninterested in "Two and a Half Men" (6% compared to men's 11%).

Atheists and "The Big Bang"

It shouldn't come as a surprise that atheists were more into "The Big Bang Theory" than any other religious group, but what might come as a bit of a surprise is that Christians were only 10% behind. The name of the show doesn't seem to turn them off. Quality comedy outshines.

This makes me lose faith in humanity. Community is far far better than BBT. It's not even close.

I lost faith in humanity when Jersey Shore became popular... Big Bang is a breath of fresh air compared to that giant bag of dog crap. LOL.

Jersey Shore is no where near as popular as BBT. And everyone knows it's a joke. Comedy-wise my favorites are Community and Parks & Rec. The Office and It's Always Sunny have lost steam. All things considered though, Justified is the best thing on television. These of course are one man's opinion...

I think its really interesting about the male and female and glee. I've never actually watched the show, but if the public loves it, then I'll probably watch an episode.

..a truly funny premise, razor-sharp writing, extremely well-developed characters and the best comedic cast since "Seinfeld"..a fantastic achievement...(and at 64 I don't always get some the comic book/sci-fi/video game references, but it's still, by far, the funniest show on the tube..)

I love it, I have a friend that hates it because he feels like the jokes are too forced. I don't care, I think it's hilarious. I especially love the Wil Wheaton episodes, they are always especially funny.

For one Big Bang theory is AWESOME!!!!!! And second, I think the funny part is the Christians were the second leading religious group....I mean, the show is basically math and science....

As far as sitcoms go, this one is pretty decent. The people I've found that hate the show the most are people with actual physics backgrounds who find some of it too inaccurate to enjoy.

My mother-n-law got me to watch this show last year and I love it, hate that I've missed sooo much. If it wasn't for Sheldon this wouldn't have lasted this long, IMO. I absolutly love him.

It's an awesome show; well-written, clever and intelligent, and often sweet. As something of a nerd myself (comics, sci-fi, etc.), it makes me happy. I can relate to a lot of what they say and do.
Also, I like the fact that Sheldon's mom, a devout, fundamentalist Evangelical Christian, isn't a hypocritical, mouth-breathing moron played for laughs. She's strong, wise and smart in her own right, and knows how to handle her "Shelly".
That kind of respect for Christians is rare in TV, or showbiz in general.

    Edited for wording.

I'm so glad to see that "The Big Bang Theory" received as many votes as all the other shows listed COMBINED! This gives me hope for the future of American pop culture. TBBT is absolutely, positively, hands-down the best moneymaking show on TV, and it's definitely the best sitcom to come down the showbiz pike in a long time. The writing is beyond clever, the characters are perfect, and the show makes me laugh over and over again whenever I watch it. Of course, Jim Parsons is hilarious as Dr. Sheldon Cooper. However, I love Kaley Cuoco's portrayal of Penny. IMO, she is adorable and funny, and the producers of TBBT hit the jackpot when they chose her for the part. I never miss an episode of TBBT on Thursday nights, and I also watch the show in syndication on cable TV. Thank you, SodaHeads, for having great taste and voting TBBT #1 in this survey!
