PUBLIC OPINION > 'The Big Bang Theory' Is Your Favorite (Money-Making) Show on TV

SodaHead TV 2012/04/11 21:32:55
The TV shows that bring in the most ad revenue aren't always the ones with the best critical response, and just because there are a lot of people watching "American Idol" or "The X Factor," that doesn't mean they're the best shows on television. But when Forbes published a list of the top 10 money-makers on TV, we jumped at the chance to find out which of those shows actually got the best response. We had a feeling it wouldn't be "Idol."

sodahead big bang theory

Bazinga! Talk about a landslide victory. With 10 of the most-watched shows on TV to pick from, "The Big Bang Theory" still managed to take half the vote. In fact, a lot of respondents commented that it's the only show on the list they watch (ever since Charlie Sheen left "Two and a Half Men"). Top-notch writing, classic sitcom scenarios, Jim Parsons' Emmy-winning performance as Sheldon, and nerd-focused humor make "The Big Bang Theory" the most popular money-maker on the tube.

Older Folks Like "Dancing"

Well, there aren't a whole lot of stats to work with since the 51% of the vote not dedicated to "The Big Bang Theory" is divided up between nine other shows, but there was a single age group that didn't make it their No. 1 pick: Voters over 65 preferred "Dancing With the Stars." That's it. Everyone else picked "Big Bang."

"Glee" Vs. "Two and a Half Men"

We did what we could with the minuscule remainder votes, and found that men and women disagreed on two shows in particular. Men were particularly uninterested in "Glee" (4% compared to women's 11%), while women were particularly uninterested in "Two and a Half Men" (6% compared to men's 11%).

Atheists and "The Big Bang"

It shouldn't come as a surprise that atheists were more into "The Big Bang Theory" than any other religious group, but what might come as a bit of a surprise is that Christians were only 10% behind. The name of the show doesn't seem to turn them off. Quality comedy outshines.

For me, the Big Bang Theory is tied with Modern Family. Sheldon Cooper and Alex Dunphy are my favorites, as I see a lot of myself in each of these characters.

I like the show, even if it full of stereotypes. Honestly, I like having brilliant academics on the TV in their own show -- it makes me happy.

If you really didn't care, why would you respond in the first place?

You don't have to care to comment. You can still be apathetic to something despite talking about it. Example: People are apathetic towards abortion, that doesn't mean they can't talk about it.
  • Kirbyderby Elementer 2012/04/24 21:49:13
    Kirbyderby
Since when are people apathetic about abortion? Are you men really that self-centered?
  • Elementer Kirbyderby 2012/04/24 21:52:17
    Elementer
    What?

People have always been apathetic towards abortion in the sense that they don't care what a woman does with her body.

Being a man has nothing to do with it.

It is my favorite TV show and is one of the best so far I've seen. It is quite addictive and makes a person want to see it on a daily basis. After watching it for awhile, people can find themselves addicted to it and it is then hard to live without seeing. It has been my personal experience that i have not been able to spend my day without thinking of the antics of Sheldon Cooper and sometimes Howard too. It is easily one of the best sitcoms ever made with an excellent cast. Jim Parsons has done a marvelous job portraying Sheldon Cooper. The others too have acted well and fit their characters respectively. It is a little explicit but wins the attention of almost anyone (even if they're not into science).

What is terrible about it, other than the fact that you do not particularly enjoy it? Look at the list of shows again (two and a half men, dancing with the stars, etc.) -- do you see anything better?

It's not funny. Not to me at least. I don't even like the setting of the show.

Two and a Half Men had a few good episodes, and that was before Kutcher. This particular season of DWTS is boring, etc etc.

At first I resisted the show. As a nerd, I find t the stereotype of the socially awkward nerd who cannot talk to members of the opposite sex as a bit overdone. Ever since large-scale development of the FEMALE nerd population several decades ago; those negative phenomenon have been on a sharp decline. Sure there is a definite sub-culture of nerds still like that but it's not the "norm" as it used to be. Also there is the "wimp" stereotype that bugs me. Perhaps that's just me. At some point ~mid high school I put on a fair amount of muscle (and learned a bit about how to fight from a few friends of mine) and tended not to get picked on so much anymore.

However, the show grew on me. It's funny; Damn funny. And the boys DO seem to be able to interact with nerds of the opposite sex in a fairly normal manor. And I do like seeing likable nerds not only featured on a show (like as a wacky neighbor) but the "norm" or primary characters.

I know what you mean... at first I thought it was dreadful, full of lame stereotypes and very little substance. But it grows on you -- I think the fact that they talk real science helps, plus the fact that they pretty much avoid politics and other charged topics (at least from what I've seen).

The characters are awkward nerds, but they usually come out on top. As main characters, they do defy the TV stereotype of the (usually marginalized) token nerd with no love life... in some ways they are reminiscent of the cast of Seinfeld -- quirky to a fault, socially awkward, yet still endearing...

I love this show, probably due to the fact that I can relate to Sheldon is almost every way. I love that this show presents geeks such as myself in a favorable light. Through in all the Doctor Who and Star Wars references, and it really is one of the best shows on TV. Even if they did insult Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is the second best show on TV (after Doctor Who. Poor Penny, kicked out of Who-con. That just sucks D:)
  • Edwin TARDISgirl 2012/04/16 18:27:17

Well, Doctor Who *used* to be awesome, but I think it's been slipping ever since they introduced the River storyline...

Oh, I like River. I mean, I was a LITTLE disappointed...I expected a huge, mind-blowing twist...but we all knew that she was Amy's daughter.

Still, River Song is pretty awesome. Any girl who can make a Dalek beg for mercy is okay in my book.

Fair enough... but lately, it seems they've been stuck trying to force the story arc to work, rather than simply letting it evolve naturally. It just seems awkward, in a way that the previous incarnation never was.

Hmm, alright, I see where you're coming from. I'm one of those fans who think Moffat is the best thing that ever happened to Doctor Who, and at the moment, I'm wearing a Matt Smith shirt (as he is my favorite Doctor), but I understand what you're saying, and I respect your opinion.
