PUBLIC OPINION > Supermodels Were Hotter Back in the Day

SodaHead Celebs 2012/06/04 21:00:00
Society's definition of sexy has shifted over the years, and naturally so has the stereotypical supermodel. Though past supermodels like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum still command a great deal of respect and admiration, they're a little old to top the list. But do today's supermodels live up to the standard set by supermodels before them? We asked the public.

supermodels

In 2007, Claudia Schiffer told Vogue, "In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls. That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by popstars and actresses." As a result, it seems, the image has suffered. Only about a third of respondents prefer today's supermodels -- Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, maybe Kate Upton if things go her way -- to supermodels of the past. Many suggested the main reason is that models these days are too skinny, though others suggested supermodels have always been pencil-thin.

Men Are More Into Today's Models

Though both genders preferred the supermodels of days gone by, most of the nostalgia came from women. Men were about 15% more likely to accept today's lineup. That's a good thing for magazines like Sports Illustrated or FHM, who primarily sell to men, but for women' magazines like Elle and Vogue, it might be in their interest to keep Klum and Banks on the cover.

Back in the Day

Predictably, age had an affect on how respondents voted. It wasn't exactly linear, but there was a clear shift at 25 years old, where preference shifted about 12% on average in favor of today's models. It's got to be tough for a teenager to pick a supermodel the age of their mothers over someone on the cover of the latest Victoria's Secret catalog.

Drinkers Don't Like Contemporary Models

Believe it or not, neither age nor gender showed the strongest correlation. Drinkers stood out the most. By far. Considering drinkers made up more than a third of the vote, it's remarkable that only 8% of them preferred today's models. It could partly have something to do with age, but there's definitely something else going on here. Cleary, a glass of wine just doesn't go with today's talent.

@Sodahead: Your correlation with drinkers is flawed.
Maybe that's WHY they drink, at least subconsciously. There is very little in the way of natural affection and beauty anymore.

There have been stick-thin models since the twenties. I'm glad my sentiment was expressed by the Sodahead staff.
Does no one remember how people loved Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, or Susan Dey, all women with prominent bones?
There is always a desire for the good ol' days when such and such wasn't there or didn't happen (when it usually did).

Photoshop wasn't even thought up those days. Ladies were allowed to show their natural glamour.

Airbrushing still existed back then, so your argument is invalid.

They never (Or they very rarely (much like today.).) used bigger women as models in the old days of modeling. Your uninformed and piss-poor attempt at an argument is also invalid.

its a illustration of what photoshop 'can' do.
airbrushing has nowhere near the capabilities of photoshop.
your argument is a misinterpretation, therefore making it invalid.

YOUR argument is invalid. The after is the before and the before is the after. IT'S BRITNEY SPEARS WHEN SHE WAS 17!!! I know My idol lol. Nobody hires fat models to make them skinnier with photoshop. It's a non-sense. These models are already thin and flawless. Godddd

Like I said its an illustration of what photoshop can do, I knew it was her I knew it was the wrong way around, I know that they don't hire fat models, but I also know that if they did we wouldnt be able to tell.
As I explained before you posted this, rendering your argument invalid.

I don't see how people find being that skinny is attractive. I mean, the models then weren't fat, they had curves.

Up until twiggy ! She ushered in that androgynous "little boy" look that the men who design ladies apparel (but hate ladies) so much adore.

Twiggy aka "the first supermodel" who was huge in the 60's. She's still alive but old now. Certain fat people like to paint her as the poster child for ED's and body-image issues but they really can't, because she's naturally thin and has criticized about the problem with body image standards in the industry.

I love how people always compare models' bodies to little boys, even though girls and boys have the same general shape during childhood until puberty hits.
And you make zero sense, why would male designers be making clothing for women if they hate them? If that were true they'd just stick to menswear. You seem to forget who makes the clothes for all the *curvy* actresses guys like to drool over.
  • Matt Aly Hart 2012/06/06 12:16:04
    Matt
Because they are gay. Do you believe that high heels or bras were actually designed by somebody who liked women ?
