PUBLIC OPINION > Supermodels Were Hotter Back in the Day

SodaHead Celebs 2012/06/04 21:00:00
Society's definition of sexy has shifted over the years, and naturally so has the stereotypical supermodel. Though past supermodels like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum still command a great deal of respect and admiration, they're a little old to top the list. But do today's supermodels live up to the standard set by supermodels before them? We asked the public.

supermodels

In 2007, Claudia Schiffer told Vogue, "In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls. That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by popstars and actresses." As a result, it seems, the image has suffered. Only about a third of respondents prefer today's supermodels -- Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, maybe Kate Upton if things go her way -- to supermodels of the past. Many suggested the main reason is that models these days are too skinny, though others suggested supermodels have always been pencil-thin.

Men Are More Into Today's Models

Though both genders preferred the supermodels of days gone by, most of the nostalgia came from women. Men were about 15% more likely to accept today's lineup. That's a good thing for magazines like Sports Illustrated or FHM, who primarily sell to men, but for women' magazines like Elle and Vogue, it might be in their interest to keep Klum and Banks on the cover.

Back in the Day

Predictably, age had an affect on how respondents voted. It wasn't exactly linear, but there was a clear shift at 25 years old, where preference shifted about 12% on average in favor of today's models. It's got to be tough for a teenager to pick a supermodel the age of their mothers over someone on the cover of the latest Victoria's Secret catalog.

Drinkers Don't Like Contemporary Models

Believe it or not, neither age nor gender showed the strongest correlation. Drinkers stood out the most. By far. Considering drinkers made up more than a third of the vote, it's remarkable that only 8% of them preferred today's models. It could partly have something to do with age, but there's definitely something else going on here. Cleary, a glass of wine just doesn't go with today's talent.

In my opinion, there's different types of beauty. Beautiful can be describe in soooo many ways. A part of mee says yees, models were "hotter" back in the day, due to their elegence. But then the other part disagrees. Models today and back then show two different types of beauty. I'd haveto sy they are quite different. but neither is "hotter" than the other.

sorry i kinda disagree. the typical model of back then are way more beautiful compared to the stero typical model today. Yes its true that beauty is found in many different shapes and forms and even shown by personalty alone but look at the sterotypical model today. The ideal look of being a shape of your skeletal system. Know i love the skeletons but when it comes to actually seeing it constantly and as the look its discusting. So i do agree with your idea of everyone is uniquely beautiful in there one way but when it gets to the point that everyone looks almost the same as a stick except for the slight difference in facial as model compaired to back then well nope back then is the winner in my book

I think they always have been always will be hot women. They age of the "super model" has past look at any magazine cover and it more than not a celebrity. With good reason the models were making outrageous demands and salary. The I won't get out of bed for less than $10000.00 a day comes to mind.Celebrities do it for publicity's sake most not getting paid.

Depends on the women and the age they are in, like trying to find a star formation, they constantly shift hairstyles and make up techniques, invisible to most, never to me.

I have always noticed women, and always will, they love to be sneaky and have there gossip and fix ups in the toilet, but I know exactly what they be thinking from a simple look.

Find a man like me who can actually see what women feel, if you are a smart, indepedendant* woman, we (he and she) will have mutual benefits for each other.

To be honest all models are selling illusions. None of them look like their pictures in the magazines. With photoshopping, etc. their magazine pictures cover up the blemishes, they look "perfect". If you were to see them on a day where they aren't wearing full makeup you would be surprised how ugly they look.

They were much hotter back in the day because they had all their natural features and didn't look like toy babies with plastic parts. I bet the anorexia rate was much lower back then, too. That's why I'm glad Israel took a stand and banned underweight models from walking the runway.

The old supermodels had curves and amazing shapes and now.. They are just really bad role models to young people because it's not normal to be that skinny. Just eat the hamburger!

Yeah they did. Now they really try and push the idea of size zero even more. One of the reasons why I adore the 1950s' and 1960s', they had those perfect pinups. Also, some of them (back in the day) had true figures, they weren't sticks.

I like fitness models. You ladies can argue all you want about fat people vs. toothpicks. But to me, there is nothing sexier than healthy woman who is tone, stong, sleek, and confident. YUP

They were hotter back then. They were sexy and womanly and the average woman can genuinely look up to that as a good example of health and beauty. Now they are walking sticks and I wouldn't trade my curves for that heck no.

No its just because now they are using stick thin models.

I'm a firm believer if two attractive people have children then their kids have kids then the human race is going to get more attractive if attractive humans are passing on their genes and this continues

I think we get an image time warp during the peak of our youth that makes us think everyone & all the styles looked better when we were young. Most of the models young & old are stunning.

You have a good point there, but my youth was in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. I think they were more attractive in the 40's and fifties. Of course I maybe thinking of pin up models. models from the 1950 s
